Well its not free, but its definitely worth mentioning since its such a great game.
Freelancer, by Microsoft. Since its old you can pick it up for as little as $10 USD if you have a look around on the net.
It supports on-line play – where you buy your ship and are free to fly around the universe to do what ever you like (hence the name Freelancer). You can trade cargo, become a pirate, do missions…… or whatever you like……
It’s a great game and definitely worth a try.

have you heard about the StarGate ? it is a free space game.
And I think that XPlane is also realeasing some free games for Space and Flight.

I highly second Freelancer. I own that game, and it is amazing. i picked it up for about 14 bucks a few months ago, at a store that usually overcharges, but it is worth the money.
