At the present for that i am using OpenDns, and it is very useful for blocking any social, porn, torrent, video sites not even that we can also block particular site or domain.

If you want to block it on just one computer, it is very easy.

Open DNS is one option.

But if you want to just hide it from a person who does not know very much about computers, then adding individual websites to the hosts file would be sufficient.

Just look for the "hosts" file

In Windows XP, it is in C:\windows\sytem32\drivers\etc

hosts

Just add the website name and a local IP address

Search on google for tips on using hosts file for blocking ads from even being downloaded, so bandwidth is saved more than using adblock

just to add you might want to check the capability of your router
some routers has an option for blocking specific websites, content filtering or parental control.

Open DNS is perfect for this.

Just follow the instructions that rjraaz has linked to.

How does your network connect to the internet ?

Is there a server computer ?

You can configure the "DNS server settings" to Open DNS either in that server computer or a router.
Once that is done, you can log in to Open DNS and change the settings and block unwanted websites and monitor web traffic all for free.

Okey thank you. im still on configuration of OPenDNS thanks guys.

It is better to deploy a proxy server and firewall appliance rather than putting local IP address in OpenDNS. If you have proxy server deployed, you can control the usage of internet bandwidth, allocate the bandwidth for servers that need more resources for data access. If users will get mad at you if you block Facebook totally, deploying a proxy server is your solution. You can set a time frame to access Facebook. Eg. 12:00 noon to 1:00 pm only. With this, you can allow your co-workers to use Facebook while lunch break without getting mad at you. Very Happy

hosts can only block single domain,
it is hard to block all the sub domains of one site.
try privoxy(a proxy software) or use a pac file.

Hosts can block all subdomains too, but it is a very clumsy way of doing it, I agree.
Adding
*.blogspot.com 127.0.0.1
in the hosts file
would block all blogspot domains.

You can use OpenDNS for a very good option to block useless websites.
You can also monitor the traffic later if you want.

You have to set the DNS servers to OpenDNS.com 's DNS addresses. Instructions are there on OpenDNS website.

I would suggest that for your purposes.

That is a great solution. Razz That is the best answer to this problem I have come across.

Hope it is easy to set up ..

I have tried only OpenDNS. For running a proxy server I thought it would need too much work.

Think
have you ever tried?
in my memory, hosts doesn't support '?' and '*' .
FunDa
My mistake. I checked again, and looks like my hosts file doesn't have * or ?

Each subdomain was on a separate line, that was why it worked.

On Open DNS, the wildcards do work. rockpan is right about hosts, it does not support wildcards at all.
portoskt
you can find a lot of software which can make anything you want about proxys

The best solution really is to setup a proxy server. but setting up such requires time and more reading on how to do it.. just use google and you fill find various solutions.
mukesh
Open DNS is perfect if want to clock sites then.
