Have you ever given a thought what will happen to your Email Accounts and Social networking sites such as Facebook when you are no more? What will happen to the personal data and informations stored? Who will get access to your account?

The question often crosses our mind. Websites like Gmail, Hotmail and Yahoo email accounts and Facebook have different policies for the deceased persons.

Accessing Gmail Account after a person’s death:

If a person has Gmail Account and he/she is dead and you want to get the ownership you will have to send a fax or an email to Google containing the following information:

  1. Your full name, physical mailing address, and verifiable email address.
  2. A photocopy of your government issued ID or driver’s license.
  3. The Gmail address of the individual who passed away.
  4. Proof of death.
  5. An email containing the full headers and the content of an earlier email message that the deceased person emailed you in past.

Postal Mail:

Google Inc.
Attention: Gmail User Support- Decedents’ Accounts
1600 Amphitheatre Parkway
Mountain View, CA 94043

Fax: 650-644-0358

Google will take 30 days to process and validate the documents that you have provided.

If you have a Yahoo account then you can't do much as inactive accounts are deleted after 6 months.

Accessing Facebook Account after a person’s death:

Facebook turns the Account into Memorial Page, removes sensitive information and sets privacy so that only confirmed friends can see the profile.

For more information go to this page.

can't think of proper sentence now. i'll change the subject if can think of shorter sentence later.

I did not know that Facebook had that function. I figured out email providers should have that option but I thought that social networks weren't do bothered of implenting such a function.

I heard that when facebook detects condolence statements in a person's page and if he doesnot react to those posts for a long time, it considers them to be dead. But didnot know about this way... Thanks for sharing.

it would be funny to see your friend's face after you have created fake news article about his death and memorializes his account , but the Hotmail's procedure seems as the most cumbersome one

I've thought about this after a friend's sister passed away recently, and I saw her online profile in facebook still the same. That was pretty sad looking at her careless pictures, and no sign of what did happened.

A close friend of mine died last year and his brothers decided to leave his Facebook profile as it is.
It's quite nice to be honest, as over time there have been many messages posted on his wall whenever people think of him - "still miss you mate" "just thought of you" that kind of thing.
It's become a virtual memorial garden in a sense and does offer some comfort to all of us who loved him.
It might not be for everyones choosing but I think the family made the right decision in my friends case.

Umm... For the important and crucial email accounts, they should have a new handler after the death
of an owner. Ahh... I never thought about this point before, thanks very much for sharing.
Great and useful information.

Sorry for the old topic 'bump' but I read the Vrythramax passing thread and it reminded me of the plan I've now got in place for after my death, just thought it was worth sharing.

I've got a short letter to my son which I keep in my wallet. It starts with a personal message, one he'll only get to read if I'm found dead, but it also has the usernames and passwords for every internet place I'm found, email accounts, forums etc.

I change my passwords every few weeks or so, and when I do I write a new letter.
It's a simple gift for the person I love the most, and if he ever gets to hold that piece of paper he'll be able to access much more information about my thoughts and the type of man I am.

...and perhaps post a goodbye for me! Smile

Lol. Maybe someone is on vacation and doesn't have acces to internet and people start writing miss you and stuff on his wall. I wonder if Facebook will delete that account then?
