Which is the best content management software

akshar
I have tried drupal and xoops. Although Xoops was the best i would like to know which is the best similar software. PhpWebsite is good i hv heard but it does not run on my comp. I get an error saying only reference to variables can be passed or smthin like that.

If you don't want it to be like a news system, but just want it to make it so every page doesn't have the layout, then just make a php page switcher. Have an array with all the pages in it, then have an include using the array. Then your page address will be like http://mystupidsite.com/index.php?p=7

I can write one for you, if you want.

None of them are very good... (Thats not to say their not great peices of software, which much effort and many mahours gone into them. but they all fail at being user friendly and generic enough... they all use the same model for CMS's which is a big mistake...) Just make your own, thats what I did.

Suffice to say that most of the CMS software out today is suited more to huge archived news sites than a personal site or even a small community site.

Maybe I'll release my code one of these days... ^_^

Cheers.

Many people design softwares, webpages, viruses, etc. What if someone design a webpage that has a software to scan files before you download them. Apply that software onto the webpage with low mb file size and allow even the slowest connection to scan their file before downloading. Well just telling you my idea. I have already had it copyrighted 2005.

If anyone would like to give me ideas or has any programming or web page skills leave me a message about you and what kind of skills you may have. Im looking for other users that would work for money. Webpage developers, software programmers, all must come and unit under this Forum.

We all will be waiting to see what you have come up with.
I do have to agree with the popular opinion. most that are offered are not very user friendly.

Hi There,

I have some experience creating webpages and e-portals. Mambo and PHP Nuke are the CMS that i know (non-comercial).

I think Mambo has been sold to a some big company and is no longer open-source.

PHP Nuke is a good bet. It haves a lot of support, themes, addons, scripts and so. I works with phpBB, so its very easy to complement a portal with a discussion forum.

If you are looking for an open-source Content Management System, PHP Nuke is a good solution.
Huhnteufel
PHP Nuke is large, cumbersome, and insecure. Just a nasty program in my opinion. I hear Joomla! is really good (previously known as Mambo), but to be honest, I haven't used a CMS in quite some time.

Joomla My friend, is the best CMS around, atleast that I know of! I mean this CMS is THE more robusrt, error free, scalable CMS ever. With Easy usage of Components, Modules, and Templates, its as easy as using Windows XP!

Even the Interface (Administrative) is attractive to the naked eye. Believe me on this one. It might a bit large, but not VERY large, and besidez, you can also link the membership information with PHPbb later on, using a Bridge Module, which is also a very good feature,

There is constant development at www.developer.joomla.org

Check it out! Wink

The best CMS I have ever used would probably have to be Subdreamer. It's nice, user-friendly, easy to install, but it's a little pricy ($220), but it's quite worth the money.

Recently i had a job. For this i used http://www.etomite.org. I use mambo and php-nuke before. Mambo is simply the best if you dont know much php and you need member control like login and user groups. IF you dont need these, etoite is faaaaar more easier to adapt:D
PEACE

From what I hear TYPO3 is one of the best out there and its opensource. phpnuke seems to generally be hated by everybody.

your wrong php-nuke is very old and well supported its very professionally
you can have your own contorl even you face any hack on your web site you can easily get them
Arcath
e107 by far!!!!!!

Just make your own. The point of a CMS isn't to look like every other site on the net. It is to make your site dynamic, which means to make it so that updates don't require you to update every single page of the site. I think a good majority of web designers have gone through that. Here's the basic of what I do:

switcher.php
Code:
$n = array("page1.php", "page2.php", "boogah.php");
require($n[$p]);

index.php
Code:
//Beginning of Layout
echo("<div id='content'>");
require("switcher.php");
echo("</div>");

link to page2
Code:
<a href="index.php?p=2">

I've enhanced that over time, but that is the basic idea.

I forgot to mention, that systems allows no one to steal your layout by conventional means (I used to have it so that you could do like <a href="index.php?p=http://www.google.com"> which obviously isn't good). It also requires no mysql or any database. Just php, xhtml, and css.

If you just want to put up content, I'd highly recommend Etomite (www.etomite.org). I used it for a while and really liked it. I stopped, however, so I could use a different kind of navigation and polls and such without going through tons of addins.

I Use PHP Fusion and have used Mambo and tryed lots of other cms software.. and i have to say that PHP Fusion is the most easyest to use and has lots og grat addons themes and other stuffs and has a huge community.. just go and try it out Smile

One of the reasons I signed up here was to try a bunch of different CMS, Blog and Portal type stuff. I LIKE e107, it is easy to work with and by trying different themes you can make it look the way you want. Alittle CSS, a little PHP and you can do what you want and concentrate on CONTENT, at least thats my goal. I Just wish something like WB Editor http://www.wbeditor.com/ would work with it, any ideas?
bnbrown
I'm also seeking such software, and not a php stuff. Just easy blogging software to update my website content. WBEditor can't be bad, but it's just a 14 day trial... Looking for the answer.

I use HTTP://WWW.DOTNETNUKE.COM for my website. It is written in vb.net. Hosting isn't a whole lot more than a php based site. I pay $4 a month. Includeing MSSQL.

I dislike php so I decided to stay away from it. Mambo kind of caught my attention though.
shabda
Gosh why do you pay 4$ for a cms when better are free. But I guess anything with vb.net is not open source and must cost. But you really are spoilt for choice with open source cms, there must be a billion of them.

You misunderstood. If you even bothered to check out the link you'd know it is open source. The monthly fee is for hosting. Besides, I would pay for something thats not PHP. PHP just sucks.

Ok, I'v found this: http://www.snapfiles.com/downloadfind.php?st=metateque&search=Search&lc=1&action=s

I quite like MDPro.

Its very flash and intergrates well with their own forums MDForums which is a port of phpBB but they basically started again.

Its address is www.maxdev.com

They have a very good support service as well. Its also very easy to create themes.

Hmmm. As on today PHP is the language that powers the web. It runs the forum frihost runs on, as well as a Bazzilion other sites. So if you say PHP sucks, probably you need to readjust your perspective.

No I don't. PHP is popular, it don't make it a good scripting language. And PHP doesn't power the web. Like I said its just popular.
shabda
I am using joomla now for http://www.shabda.name/. It was first CMS I used professionally and I am quite content with the results. Easy, customisable, has good skin support as all mambo skins can be used with it. So I wont say it is best coz I dint use any other, but its good enough.

Why is PHP popular if not it is good. IS it due to the fact that PHP.org pays me 3.95$ everyday to use it instead of PHP. BUT vb sure suck. GOsh they even had goto and gosub not so long ago.

Because its free. I just don't like it, get over it.

Twisted Evil Ok I got over it. Happy now?

I used Xoops.
It's good ,but not great!!!
Sometimes, I found it's stupid or non-sense when use some functions.
I would like to try others, but worried how transfer from xoops since I have much data..... Sad
Arnie
I like Limbo, the light version of Mambo. If you have to use a CMS, why not take a light one? But imo over 50% of the CMS sites could have been HTML-only. If there's only one admin, and you know HTML, why use a CMS? It's only wasting resources.
thnn
Arnie makes a good point about only using HTML if you are the only admin. However this raises problems if you are posting messages in a blog or posting news items on your site as it can be a lot of effort to add a item to your site especially if it is a news site with full news pages, and especially if you want people to leave messages. Unless Arnie is refering to using PHP to generate these HTML pages.
