Since Windows Vista, Robocopy is an integral part of the os. Robocopy is a powerful command line copy program. This is apparent especiallly when it comes to creating incremental backups. These are confirmations which only take into consideration new or modified files and quickly run through them. The tool often offers many cryptic parameters. For a quick and easy backup of important data, it is however sufficient to know only a fraction of these parameters. Task planner and work schedule allow synchronization processes as well as automation.
To start the program, type in the command 'cmd' in the search field of the Start menu and press [Enter]. The command syntax is very important; the command and parameters must be entered in a fixed order in a row.
Call the tool with its name followed by the source and destination of the copy operation. Both can be files and directories. Wildcards such as '*' as place hoder for any number of characters are allowed. Set other parameters for how Robocopy should hadle data.
To create a Backup use the parameter '/MIR'. It reflects the structure of the source in a given archive folder. By default, Robocopy adds the entry to other parameters, for example '/E' and '/PURGE'. '/E' copies all full and empty subdirectories, '/PURGE' deletes all files in the destination folder that no longer exist in the source.
