The Godfather is definately the best gangster film of all time. It really inspired all the other films and thats how the whole genre of ganster films started.
I have to say I'm quite fond of "Things To Do In Denver When You're Dead" with Andy Garcia and Christopher Walken. "The Godfather" is a great gangster saga but I just find it a bit too stereotypical for a gangster film.
As much as I like Goodfellas, the classic gangster movie is the Godfather.
Pulp Fiction or Resevour Dogs.

Godfather is a classic, Scarface is a legend in the gangster rap community, Pulp Fiction is great because of the dialogue, but still i think I enjoyed Good Fellas the most out of any of them. Then again, they are hard to compare, it depends what kind of mood im in.

The Godfather and Scarface are always number 1 and 2 in most peoples opinion. Pulp Fiction and Resevoir Dogs are great movies too, But I also like Things to do Denver.

Godfather all the way...it was a great movie.

The Godfather II is my favourite. I love the flashbacks to the old days when vito was starting out. Pacino is great in it. One guy who doesn't get enough props for his work in the first two is Robert Duvall.

Stereotypical? I think not.
The Godfather defined the gangster genre (It STARTED the gangster pop culture). Goodfellas, Scarface, Donnie Brasco, Pulp Fiction, Casino, Carlito's way, City of God owes their roots to The Godfather trilogy.
If you find it stereotypical it is only because too many movies tried emulate it and paraphrase it. Even a science fiction movie like Alien 2 quoted The Godfather.
In other words its influence is everywhere - in the movies, music (gangsta raps, etc.), television shows (Soprano, etc.) - it has become a symbol in itself.
The casts becames the staple of gangster movies to come (Al Pacino, Marlon Brando, Andy Garcia, Robert De Niiro).
Michael as the Godfather can be compared to the tragedy of Shakespeare's King Lear - the nepotistic belief of putting family first more than anything else, blinding him to other issues. Like other Shakespeare's tragedy it showed how power corrupted the once innocent Michael, transforming him to a power hungry monster.
