Blu-ray disc hits 100GB

babumuchhala
TDK has developed a prototype Blu-ray disc that can store twice as much data as current iterations of the next-generation DVD format--and record it twice as fast.

PC World reports that the 100GB disc, unveiled at a TDK exhibition in Tokyo this week, can record data at 72 megabits per second, double the 36 mbps rate of current Blu-ray discs. To achieve the higher capacity, TDK added two additional recording layers to the disc to take it up to four layers.

TDK's announcement comes on the heels of last week's news that Toshiba has created a three-layer read-only HD DVD that can hold 45GB of data. HD DVD is a competing format to Blu-ray Disc and HD DVD's maximum capacity of 30GB had been viewed unfavorably against Blu-ray Disc's maximum 50GB capacity on a dual-layer disc.

With the ever-evolving format battle heating up so fast, we're just waiting for a 12-layer disc that can double as an MP3 player and a movie screen.

Just for the fact of the matter i got a 20 GB HDD and this blu-ray disk by TDK would hold 5 times my HDD

Now tell me how many ppl have HDD thats more than 100 GBs

Now if this blu-ray disk is gonna be 100 GB when in the market. Then what should be our HDDs capacity Rolling Eyes 1 tera byte (1000 GB) or what.

Then at that time also we would be complaining abt lack of HDD space Laughing

Now playstation 3 can have games lasting a whole year Smile . The PS 3 is using sony's drives that support blus disks . Together with the cell processors, it'll be quite interesting.

Whoa. Shocked Thats larger than both my hard drives on this computer. (40 gb and 20 gb) I guessing this would be mostly for movies though. I havent encountered any game or app that used more than 5 or 10 gb.

WOW. So what happens if the disk breaks? That would stink.

regarding ^^^

i still think despite how much memory that this disk can hold we still need a medium that is longer lasting than what we are trying to replace... people still prefer a physical copy because it last longer... i don't think this as really as much of an improvement in comparison to finding a truly durable electronic recording medium
