Taiwan Disagrees With Google Maps

hrtorrent
The government of Taiwan, which rules the island nation, has complained to search engine company Google about how Taiwan is represented on Google Maps. That product refers to Taiwan as a province of China.

In a Reuters report, a spokesperson for Taiwan commented on the issue. "It is incorrect to call Taiwan a province of China because we are not," foreign ministry spokesman Michel Lu said. "We have contacted Google to express our position and asked them to correct the description."

Countries hate it when people don't porject their land maps correctly.

Most US Cartographic assns project a part of Kashmir in Chinese territories.. Also some part in Pakistan....

I feel they r doing injustice to the people and the society

Do you think this will start a search engine war?

It's very interesting, this kind of thing have been happening for ever.

This is very very simple to understand, it's business in its purest estate.

Yahoo! is able to operate in China because it complies 100% with the authorities’ requests in terms of censorship, making logs available, etc. If Google wants to have a go in the China, for the time being, has no option but to oblige to the top comrades.

It’s not just businesses; governments all over the world do the same in the name of business. For instance, how many countries do actually fully recognise Taiwan as an independent state? Very few, and those few are generally small countries that benefit from Taiwan’s overseas aid.

Political and business boycotts happened during the cold war and South Africa’s apartheid regime but as things stand at the moment, especially given the cheer size of China, that is out of the question.

I guess Taiwanese have no other option but to hang to the status quo and wait for the mainland to change its position.

IT is no doubt!

really, i dont think the google map has something wrong, but maybe have wrong now or not. we should disscuess it for some problems. What Taiwan is now or does has dependent yet. Actually Taiwan was a part of of China So that's right i think the google map.

If a country declares its independence and there is no war about it, then the country is still independent. We countries declare independence, they state their independence, most likeley expecting to be attacked. Taiwan was not, but they are still independent.
pixelkitten83
hmm, I'm sure everything will be alright, as long as they discuss it in a nice way.
picsite
wow....google maps is doing us a favour and countries go against it....on the other hand i guess they want their pride
uknowgary
If google said Taiwan is a province of China, no thing serious would happen. If not, google would be banned in China.

It is not a piece of commerce that I think this is respecting to China's sovereignty!I hope he can change such wrong method!

I think the question really should be does it really matter that much. I mean come on, they were once part of China, and to some degree they still have many ties to China. I think they spend to much time worrying about sh*t that doesn't matter and not enough time focusing on their poor starving citizens.

Taiwan is a province of China.

Everyone knows:that Taiwan is a part of China.

Google Maps have opposed in many country as it teveled many sectet place also..

The issue revolves around public opinion/propaganda.

On the surface it appears nothing serious would happen, unfortunately public opinion plays a pivotol role in shaping national policies. China would like to create the impression that Taiwan always has been a province; That has never been seperated, etc.

The fact is in the Seventies our congress passed legislation vowing that if Taiwan was attacked we would defend her. Recently a bill was passed allowing missile defense systems to be given(sold?) to Taiwan.

Again, on the surface it's like, "What's the big deal?" Look a little deeper and its a situation due to boil over by the end of the decade.

Question Everything!!!!!
geeren
Taiwan is not a province of china, In the 30's it was a province but later the communist had hunted on the goimidjan, and the escaped too taiwan, and made it there land, soo accsualy it steel belong to china
shank
they claim independence, and I'm not seeing Google trying to anger the Chinese government, they (and other companies) comply with the chinese government and their restrictions so they can keep operating in their market, look at Yahoo when they revealed information about a user for posting his opinions on the Web (not really in favour of the government, but they didn't appear to be nowhere close to inflamatory) to the government because they asked

the day will come when China will make its move on Taiwan, the internacional community wil be shocked and may even write some letters saying how shocked they are, personally I think that if Taiwan wants to be free let them be free, just keep making those RAM modules we all know and love Cool
myth-plan
The Chinese people cannot welcome to hold the prejudice or to the Chinese unfriendly any country and the company.

Google Will pay the huge price for this.

No matter which political party leads China, Taiwan all is a China's part in Past . Now . And the Future

Google is nothing. A simple and cursory search leads to many website by companies that provide the images that Googles uses. The stuff Google offers is pretty poor in quality comapred to other sites I found. If you are willing to pay $400 a month you can access to recent and very high quality Submeter Satellite Images.

With the number of high quality private and commercial satellites starting to orbit, nothing will be a secret for very long, unless your smart.

If you want to see a site with some stunning samples of image capability go here: http://www.digitalglobe.com

I downloaded and zoomed in on the big images. If I am going on vacation in a foreign country I can zoom in to see what kinda of neighborhood the motel/hotel is located in. Amazing.

Maybe satellite's are the next deterrent to global war, since everyone is naked now.

Peace,
Atomic

Taiwan forever belongs to China!
blueknot
Who cares about them ?

just do the google way.

They are alwaying wanting too much. Part of China mean part of china.

They already sign the agreement and yet they are damn greedy wanting independence.

sigh.
biga57
Google is definitely more interested in their China business.
However Taiwan so far is a Country where its people has the right to decide what they want to do.

I guess not everyone is a millionaire. For most people these pictures are of no great use. And google provides freee access to such images that are in quite a good quality. In fact you could count the cars on a parking lot in the inner city of Hannover/Germany. That's what I would call pretty good quality. Of course the image quality is likely to improve in the future, but for the first free resource of that type I think it's really good.

Umm.... ain't that the images google uses? If you ever used Google earth you'd have seen the small "(c) DigitalGlobe" in the lower center of the screen.

So long
