Man Accused Of Offering To Swap Baby For Beer

CHICOPEE (AP) ―

Authorities say a Massachusetts man offered to give his 3-month-old daughter to a maintenance man outside a gas station convenience store in exchange for a pair of 40-ounce beers.

Chicopee police say 24-year-old Matthew Brace of Northampton made the offer on Monday. The maintenance man called police, who found Brace hiding with the girl behind a trash container.

State child welfare officials took the baby into custody.

Police say Brace was not arrested but will be summoned to court to face a charge of reckless endangerment of a child. A phone number for him could not immediately be found.

The child's mother was in the store at the time buying cigarettes. She has not been charged.

This is amazing. He must need mental help I'm sure.
I would hope so anyway, surely no sane person could act like that.
I would want at least a bottle of whiskey Laughing Laughing Laughing

Whole story sounds almost too bizarre to be believable, but if it is, I can't understand why the mother was not charged with child neglect. Some children really get a bad deal in life. Wonder how much better off it is with State child welfare. So easy to get completely lost, and within a number of years when it is grown up the child may be doing exactly the same thing as it father did or maybe worse.

Easy. She wasn't charged because she did nothing wrong. She left the child with its father. There's nothing illegal about that. It's not her fault that he traded him/her for beer. That would be like me getting arrested because I know you and you stole a car. Yeah that woman is an idiot (and it's unfortunate that idiots reproduce), but being an idiot isn't illegal.

As for my opinion on the matter, what a deal! Trading something that most people really don't want (since most are accidents), something that costs an insane amount of money, something you have to take care of and raise, something that causes stress, basically, something that ruins your life for something as great as beer? The maintenance worker who traded the beer got ripped off!

Maybe that's being a little harsh... I wouldn't actually trade my baby. But then again, I wouldn't actually have a baby because kids are a terrible investment and a waste of life... So I would have had my girlfriend get an abortion before I even get in a situation that allows for that to happen.

This story sounds like it was over-sensationalized to me. Perhaps the father was not serious about selling the child. I do agree that the man who received the offer was right to call authorities, and they were right to take the children into custody pending investigation. I do not see any reason why the mother would be charged with anything, since it seems probable that she was unaware of the attempted transaction -- if indeed it was a real attempt.

I hope the government will investigate thoroughly, and offer this couple the counseling they appear to need. Although they cannot quickly return the children (unless they are very confident that the offer was never intended seriously), I hope they will allow the parents to be involved with their children and work toward returning the children when and if it is safe to do so.

Good points. And you are right. There is usually a presumption of innocence until proven guilty, so I stand corrected.
