I turned on my Garmin Nuvi last week and it told me that my maps were outdated. I guess they want you to pay to update maps every year. Is there any way around paying every year. If not is there any way to get a significant discount on the annual update fees?
garmin allowed people to buy their software to edit and customize the map and users can freely make their maps available. so there are hundreds of community providing maps that are updated on daily basis.
try to google for maps for your country. i'm sure each country have at least one community that provide garmin maps.
the availability of garmin maps are so good that some navigation software even use garmin map by just changing the file extension, and a lot of converter from garmin to other software are available.
a community (or online community) is like what we have here in frihost forum. people come together to talk about something. in frihost, we all are here to keep up our frih point. in garmin community, people will exchange update to maps, then somebody will update the map and put it on free online file host for everybody to download. the size depend on how big your country is. for small country like singapore, your map could be around 40M, for big country like US, it can be as big as 200M.
ok, i'll make thing clearer, when you install garmin, first you will have default map. it's a world map that show all countries in the world.
then you install whatever map you want, usually your local map, where in that map you have all the road, POI and navigation for the map.
now we know that road and POI is not permanent. a new road is built, old road is closed. shops and school may relocate. over time, your map will be outdated. so you need to update your map from time to time. garmin does provide updated map. but since there are lots of changes happening around the world, there is no way one company can keep up with all these changes. it may take years for garmin to come up with updated map if user base for certain country is low.
this is where the "community" come. basically these people are garmin users. they set up an online forum, the talk about their device, and naturally, they update their local map.
i hope you are following me up to this.
now it seem that your map is outdated. you can of course contact garmin about the updated maps. but bear in mind, garmin can never keep up with all the changes around the world. so you need to google for any online community for your country, join their forum, introduce yourself, download their free map, and when you have time check for any mistake and give feedback on update for any changes.
which country are you from? you can try google for "free <your country> garmin maps" and see if you can find one.
and don't forget your friends here when you got new friends on that garmin forum.
I live in Chicago in the United States. I drive a lot, but especially need my Midwest maps to be correct. In the link above did you see all the different United States maps? I am asking do I have to update maps from every region to have up to date United States maps? Isn't there a way to download one map with one command and update all my United States maps. This would be my optimal solution.
