Why do so many people spell lose wrong?

truespeed
As in loose.

It seems to be a really common spelling mistake across the net,but why?

Because they're stoopid of course.

The thin veneer of correct spelling is only an effect of spell-checking software, which doesn't pick up 'loose' because it is still a correctly spelled word in that case. In reality, they probably misspelled around 50% of their words, but the spell checker fixed most of them.

I never understood that, to be honest. As the years go by, my spell checker (including the browser based spell-checker that underlines all of my misspelled words) picks up fewer and fewer mistakes. The reasoning is that I actually take the time to learn from the mistake and as I'm correcting the word, I'm concentrating on the correct spelling so that it doesn't happen again.

So effectively, communicating on the internet or writing anything at all on my computer is a learning process that enhances my spelling ability. I also try to use different words that I wouldn't always use so that I can learn to spell new words.

But the shear lack of effort by some people is really what makes them stupid. If people would actually think about things that they do and learn from their mistakes (especially on tests - test can be a wonderful learning tool) then they would be far better off... But it's, of course, easier to ignore that tedious task, google the incorrectly spelled word, and copy/paste from the "Did you mean __________?" and move on...

Well, I have to admit that this is one that sometimes catches me out. I don't actually know why. My English is of a pretty high standard (objectively speaking rather than bragging - as a teacher we are frequently assessed officially on our use of language, as part of inspection).
This particular word still gets me though. Since I am aware of it, it normally doesn't slip through...
@AFaceinthematrix: yes, that is my attitude as well - the thing is that I've sat myself down and gone through the use of lose and loose so many times...and STILL I find myself occasionally staring blankly at the word wondering if I need one less o....Why I cannot say....

I think i have seen you spell it as such bikerman. Sometimes i think more people spell it incorrectly than those who spell it correctly,or maybe i only notice when its spelt wrongly, which is seemingly a lot of the time by a lot of people.

I did google the question after i asked it,and the question has been asked by a lot of people, one answer i found that was interesting is ,how do people who spell lose as loose, spell the word loose?

Let me try to be completely plain and clear. Since the definition of respect is pretty important, and the questions just lead you into quagmire.
Consider:
a) No., yes or maybe. Is person-hood binary (ie you either have it or you don't) ? Does it start at birth, conception, or perhaps later, when the child has developed enough to have an opinion? Let's simplify and put it in blunt terms - can someone loose their right to basic human rights simply by expressing an opinion. No, not in my book. If they are a person, then nothing they can say will change that. The word 'respect' does nothing here but muddy the question. .

I blame the teachers. Smile

The sound. A lot of us spell according to what we remember as the sound of a word. And when the language isn't one's native language, spelling mistakes occur. English isn't one of those languages in which one writes as one hears.
