What would happen if you see your own brain?

saratdear
Hi,

I wasn't sure whether to post it here or in one of the science forums, but here goes :

Supposing a technology was invented that would make it possible to take your brain out and allow you to see it. It would still be connected to your body and all; in short, it would work as a normal brain, sans being inside your head. What would your reaction be when you see it? (Let's not consider the aesthetic aspect - So nothing about "Eww that looks gross and slimy" Laughing )

What would you think? You could think - "Oh..that's the thing I do my thinking stuff with." and then realise that the "thing" is sitting there in front of it and it is saying about itself. Shocked

So...what are your ideas?

Now that is a novel idea! Think I like it. Especially if I can fine-tune it. I see myself using a very tiny electronic device to fine-tune my memory abilities. Maybe erase some memories I don't want to remember. If it is hardy to remove, then possibly it would be less sensitive during accidents as well. What would be wonderful is that people may be able to fix their own heads where there are faulty areas and causing them to be depressed or bi-polar or all of those kinds of diseases by adding or removing circuits or get electronic brain specialists to work on it while they are waiting.

Well, controlling your brain like that (scary - the you are thinking in your own brain about controlling itself) is not what I had thought about, but that is a nice idea. What I was really hunting for is how would you feel that all the thinking you are doing is done by the thing in front of you - and that you are realising it is your brain because that is taking the input from your eyes and says to you - "Hey, that's me. I am seeing myself. Smile

No not really controlling, but "fixing". Surgery to the brain is really risky, not to mention chemicals that people have to take to fix areas of their brain, such as in Parkinson's. But OK, I get that you are asking for something different:

Would probably be funny, like a toy. To see the brain doing that. Smile But may be the equivalent of the feelings that people still have when a limb has been amputated. It would still feel as though the brain is in the head. What is sitting in front of them may look surreal, like someone looking at their amputated arm or leg and they may still feel the arm or leg is where they had been before.

I would want it back in safely asap! Or I just might freak out and kill myself (not cool)

If I could see my own brain, I would find that very difficult. However, if I could ask it questions would definitely have conversations with it. It would feel like I was in another time zone and for the length of time I was in that state it would be very disconnecting. It would go on to live, I would go on to live and since life means to change, I would not feel like a part of it eventually, suppose.

I am looking just a little beyond the physical of what you are searching for in that I think you want to actually see yourself from another perspective. In other words you want to get outside your own self and see yourself. Is that correct?

Don’t we do that by mirror? We can show ourselves to others and see what reaction we get.

It is nice to read the responses here, but no Bluedoll, what I was thinking for is not seeing myself from another perspective.

What I was thinking about is the weirdness of seeing outside your body you are doing your thinking with. I mean, you will see the brain and realise, "Hey, that is my brain". But then, your brain is the one which is receiving the input from your eyes and telling you - "yes, that's my brain." I guess I would be pretty freaked out.

That can be roughly compared to what we do when we stand if front of a mirror, of course. Our own eyes are seeing the eyes and other parts of the body and commenting on it.

Or if Hannibal Lecter handed you a mirror?
I think it would be severely disorientating to see something in front of you that has always been behind your eyes doing your thinking for you.
chatrack
If I see my brain in a group of my friend's brains... I think i could not recognise it.

I was thinking of Hannibal Lecter as well, and him sallivating when my brain is sitting in front of me, planning what recipe he would use. Shocked Twisted Evil
Insanity
I don't think anything would happen. I'd just be wow'ed spectacularly. But I don't see how that's possible. It's sort of like a machine finding out it's source code.

I need to stop posting under this topic. I am seeing brains being examined by very self conscience people with expressions of confusion, extremely thick glasses with over exaggerated eyes looking down on something the size of a pea. As they speak in high pitch voices some mutter things like “why is this happening?”
goutha
What a bizarre question.

Well if it happens it means that chances are very high that you are already dead!
czarulit
I would voimt my last meal.
coreymanshack
If I could see my brain in front of me, I would not think any different unless i were dead. I would examine it, because I don't see very many brains. Am I not allowed to examine myself?
soljarag
whoa, I love this question! when i think about it, it freaks me out Smile

i would question where exactly "I" am...... am i where my brain is viewing myself as if i was watching myself on a tv screen, or am "I" where my eyes are ... or am "I" in two places at one time...

if some how your brain was on the 1st floor of a building and your body was on the 2nd story, where would you consider yourself to be?

If this could happen, then our bodys are just vehicles for our minds...... freaky stuff
Arty
That's almost possible. People have gone through open brain surgeries where they are awake, for medical reasons. Doctors can video the brain and let them see it while they're having the surgery. In that case they are seeing their one brain.
Nameless
If it was both easy, safe, and presumably reversible to remove brains, I can think of at least three awesome things I would immediately set out to do:

1. Put my brain in a jar. INSTANT IMMORTALITY, heck yes.
2. Put my brain in a safe, and then merrily piss off all my enemies. Just try and kill me now, robot ninja assassins from the future! (The joke will be on them.)
3. Put my brain in a women's body. For, uh, science.
bjluo
No not really controlling, but "fixing".
crimson_aria
I f I see my brain in front of me.. the first thing I'd probably think of is "How does Einstein's or other famous intelligent people's brains look like?" XD

Totally agree with you. I still don't understand the goal behind this question!
Ghost900
I would have fun testing it, I would try and think about nothing and then start doing a lot of thinking to see if it changes shapes. Then I would put it back in my head before my dog decided to eat it.

Doh, I'd get hungry of course!

I've actually seen inside my own brain. MRI results Rolling Eyes
Nothing interesting, it's mostly empty with flies going around... Razz
jabce85
Can I poke it with a stick?
carlospro7
I would probably freak out. I've always heard about how sensitive your brain can be. I wouldn't want it exposed.
iman
Hmm, if you did that, it'd be pretty recursive, because you're thinking about what does your thinking.
paul_indo
I think that would depend on where you saw it.

If I saw it lyeing splattered on the floor that could be a problem
mrcool
Maybe, I will be curious about seeing my own brain and at the same time, shocked as well....
spring567
I don't think it is a special thing if it is a truth.

Nope, not in my dream to see my brain on actual event. That's pretty scary if that happens to somebody that's mean your feeling not good and they take your brain out for some test. But if you brain and your heath's OK. No need to get your brain out I don't like the idea but if let say I can see my brain to some sort new high technology that scan my head and from the monitor I can see my brain. Then that would be ok but no extraction or anything like that. The first thing that I need to look for in my brain to see if there's any rusty part so I can clean it to make my brain works as brand new.... it's like overhauling...

... as you reach over for the polishing cloth to shine the tarnished part of your brain you hear this screeching voice in the back ground.

Now you are thinking, having a well groomed brain things will make everthing work smoother and it is all part of your maintenance plan.

A tea cup smacking a counter dribbles cold tea on the counter and your Aunt Gertrude says, “your little urchin, get your toys put away right now, I almost tripped on the stupid things.”

Of course you know this is not possible, Aunt Gertrude has been dead for years so the sounds you are hearing are a malfunction or are they?

Should we revise your overhaul routine or continue?

I would be awestruck!

I was passing out just seeing my blood, what more if I see my brain?

By FAR the best answer. I would do that... ...and take a shower! Shocked
