Good french music

kutekitten
First off, I'm a french immersion student, meaning that around half my classes are in french. I'm trying to work on a project for french civics and I can't seem to concentrate, generally music helps a lot with that problem. However, listening to music in english and trying to concentrate on french are not helping at all so I was wondering if anyone knows any good french music.

P.S. I used the bold because there are people who wouldn't want to read the entire message just for that one part, it makes what I'm looking for more clear because I tend to go on and on about things... didn't want to confuse anyone.

Well most 'classics' in the french music are pretty old, some titles that pop up right now:

Michel Sardou - les lacs du Connemara
Aline - Christophe
Plastic Bertrand - ça Plane Pour Moi
Pour un Flirt avec toi
Joe Dassin - Les Champs-Elysées or
here
Les Poppys - Non Non Rien N'a Changé
Il est cinq heures, Paris s'éveille - Jacques Dutronc
Claude François - Alexandrie, Alexandra
Claude François - Comme d'habitude
Jacques Brel - Ne Me Quitte Pas

Or a pretty new song, of the popular Tektonik style in France. (Just watch the guy perform all those moves, that's Tektonik Razz ).
Yelle - A Cause Des Garçons (Tepr Remix)

(My favourites are in bold)

I got some rock for you if you like music from Quebec.
It's not real ''French'' it's ''Quebecois'' it's not like the kind of French you can see in France so don't worry if you can't understand some expressions.

- Majorlee - it's kind of punk-rock, it really sounds like Sum-41, Blink-182 and Simple Plan.

- Les Bumpers Stickers - It's kind of punk-rock too!

-Les Pistolets Roses - It's rock/metal, it's a bit heavier than the 2 other bands but it still really good to listen!

-eXterio - Punk Rock too, very funny lyrics!

Those are my favorites ! They are really great Wink
Give me some feedback!
Enjoy music made in Quebec!

Edit : You should come into the French forum to see what's happening there!

Good French music - isn't that an oxymoron ?

rofl, I don't worry about that too much, as I live in Canada and not France...

You guys are great, thank you so much, and keep it coming.

Oh, and pll, I've been thinking about joining that for a little bit, my french isn't really that great, but if I find something there, I will most definitely post Smile

Merci.

At this moment, in Belgium, there are two popular french songs, named

The Pope of Dope from The Subs ft. The Partyharders
and
Alors on danse from Stromae

Be sure to check them out. Smile

Serge Gainsbourg

Also look at French music from Quebec. Bands like Stars, Arcade Fire or Lili Fatale, or singers such as Lara Fabian.

I love to listen to Francoise Hardy's early (60's / 70's) stuff....very relaxing, and French.
Francoise Hardy

And newer stuff I like is the very groovy Stereolab

"Voyage voyage"is a GREAT song....as a Brit, I always feel it's VERY Europ-pop sounding....a brilliant, "big" sound! Cool

You can also check out "On Ne S'aimera Plus Jamais" by Larusso. Smile

Julie Doiron (from Sackville, NB) has some decent French language stuff. Most of her discography is English, but she has various songs and an album in French (Desormais). Julie fits into that folky singer-songwriter type of vein, kinda like, say, Joni Mitchell I guess, with some indie rock mixed in there.

Jorane is a Quebecois cellist/avant garde musician, who has some English tracks, but much of her stuff is in French.

Avec pas d'Casque is a Montreal based French folk/indie-rock ensemble with some fun stuff.

There's also a nice rock-based band Noir Desir, classics of 90s.
Grunge or something even post-punk.
Love them.

Serge Gainsbourg
Vanessa Paradis (Johnny Depp's wife)
Lili Fatale (French Canadian rock band)
