Sitting too much could be deadly

menino
I sit about the whole day, but not continuously. I sit most of the time, and take regular breaks, but it seems according to this research with reference down below, it could be deadly. I hope its not true.

LONDON Here's a new warning from health experts: Sitting is deadly. Scientists are increasingly warning that sitting for prolonged periods even if you also exercise regularly could be bad for your health. And it doesn't matter where the sitting takes place at the office, at school, in the car or before a computer or TV just the overall number of hours it occurs.

Research is preliminary, but several studies suggest people who spend most of their days sitting are more likely to be fat, have a heart attack or even die.

In an editorial published this week in the British Journal of Sports Medicine, Elin Ekblom-Bak of the Swedish School of Sport and Health Sciences suggested that authorities rethink how they define physical activity to highlight the dangers of sitting.

While health officials have issued guidelines recommending minimum amounts of physical activity, they haven't suggested people try to limit how much time they spend in a seated position.

"After four hours of sitting, the body starts to send harmful signals," Ekblom-Bak said. She explained that genes regulating the amount of glucose and fat in the body start to shut down.

Even for people who exercise, spending long stretches of time sitting at a desk is still harmful. Tim Armstrong, a physical activity expert at the World Health Organization, said people who exercise every day but still spend a lot of time sitting might get more benefit if that exercise were spread across the day, rather than in a single bout.

That wasn't welcome news for Aytekin Can, 31, who works at a London financial company, and spends most of his days sitting in front of a computer. Several evenings a week, Can also teaches jiu jitsu, a Japanese martial art involving wrestling, and also does Thai boxing.

"I'm sure there are some detrimental effects of staying still for too long, but I hope that being active when I can helps," he said. "I wouldn't want to think the sitting could be that dangerous."

Still, in a study published last year that tracked more than 17,000 Canadians for about a dozen years, researchers found people who sat more had a higher death risk, independently of whether or not they exercised.

"We don't have enough evidence yet to say how much sitting is bad," said Peter Katzmarzyk of the Pennington Biomedical Research Center in Baton Rouge, who led the Canadian study. "But it seems the more you can get up and interrupt this sedentary behavior, the better."

Figures from a U.S. survey in 2003-2004 found Americans spend more than half their time sitting, from working at their desks to sitting in cars.

Experts said more research is needed to figure out just how much sitting is dangerous, and what might be possible to offset those effects.

"People should keep exercising because that has a lot of benefits," Ekblom-Bak said. "But when they're in the office, they should try to interrupt sitting as often as possible," she said. "Don't just send your colleague an e-mail. Walk over and talk to him. Standing up."

Well, there is a reason we have legs. Our bodies were not meant to be held in a sitting position for prolonged periods of time, and obviously that carries health risks.

Wow! That's crazy! Of course, it does kind of make sense as per the reply - those legs do make up a large part of our bodies (they must be important Smile

Agreed. If you do not use it, you loose it. Smile Sitting has to be really bad. I've been sitting too much, including too many hours on the Internet. Probably time for changing my lifestyle a little bit, move more and get fit and healthy.

this is great information. sometimes i think about this topic and it scares me but i just ignore it cause there is nothing to be done in the mean time. i am glad i work in an organisation where i walk a lot more than sit down. its good them. in life really too much of every / anything is bad. we must strive to have a balanced diet, lifestyle, relationship with spouce, family etc... hmm lifes good anyway!

I never ever want a desk job, as I can't stand sitting all day long (pun intended!)
But I usually take a break every hour or so, and take a walk, thanks to my tired brain, and my small bladder. Also, I drink water regularly. Laughing plus, I try to visit other departments or take small walks during lunch time.

Peace.

I'm not sure that's relevant or true.
Who sits down for longer than 4 hours? Not even movies last that long. It'd be very rare to find someone who sits down for that long.
Besides, i sleep for longer than 4 hours lying down. and i don't feel like my health is being drained away because i've been lying down for many hours. so is it really true?

You will be surprised loyal. There are many people who vegetate in front of TVs or playing games. They become totally disassociated from their bodies and environment. So basically their metabolisms are serious affected, especially when they do not get enough sleep and when the blood can't circulate properly through the body. When people eat in excess on top of everything, the extra weight is a real hazard for health.

Sleeping at least 7 hours a night is really necessary for good health. The rest probably needs to be in moderation.

i also sit all the day ... but i'm healthy:-??

too much of something is bad, true. It's a pain on the butt to sit all day, people need to stand, walk and stretch their bodies every once in a while.

I spend a lot of time sitting even though I walk the rest of the day. But the time I spend sitting, I feel terrible after that :S. Must reduce sitting on the computer too much now I guess.

Thanks for sharing this interesting article! Smile

sitting long = walking long = standing long = illness. we should adjust our body action and change pose oftenly, then can keep healthy.
