After Effects is a very powerful tool for film making and many things... Ive been blown away of its capability to render some of the amazing effects we usually see in the movies... My curiosity to learning after effects started when i was driven to design a spinning earth for a web banner... and browsing for tutorials i've come across this awesome site called videocopilot.com.... since then ive been hooked to using after effects to put my creativity into a whole new level... Warning: After Effects is addictive!

Just like jeck said - After Effects is extraordinarily powerful, but it is quite difficult to use well. If all you want to do is some effective green screening, then you'll do fine, but to use it to its full extent, well, that takes a fair deal of knowledge.

It's easy to get into if you have a background with some photoshop or other Adobe software and you follow tutorials at first. However, you will end up doing things the hard way and get stuck a lot. It really takes a long time to master. I've probably put like 40+ hours into it over the years and I still feel like I could be doing things more efficiently and faster. But it's easy enough for basics once you understand the basic UI

I personally choose After Effects over any other program for special effects.
I've tried other programs, but I personally felt most comfortable using After Effects. Most people also say that it is the most powerful special effects program out there. Whether or not this is true, I am really not qualified to comment, as I've only really used After Effects. I've tried others, but not enough to debate which is better. If you plan on getting into special effects seriously, I'd recommend After Effects. It is backed up by a huge company, and it is extremely powerful. Only downside is that it is probably going to take you a good amount of time to master. LostOverThere
Even after considering price and computer resources required to run the software, this really is the biggest problem most users encounter with After Effects. It is not a consumer product - and very daunting for most users (myself included). kaanrevan
aa good program but difficult during the design... have a lot of knowledge about program before.

Yes...the daunting part about delving into After Effects is the fact that it IS NOT a consumer product. I have a very humble computer editing system (laptop with Final Cut), and I'm a bit worried about the capacity to which my computer will handle the software. I've seen After Effects demos, and it seems to be a VERY powerful tool to see the least.

After Effects is just amazing. Its not easy at first but is worth it. just need some time and practice... but is defenetly one of the best postproduction programs out there...

After Effects is not a real time program anyways. I used an old G4 powerbook for quite a few years with After Effects. It's not like you are using it to edit video together (or you shouldn't be anyways, much faster to do that in a editing program like Final Cut.) You use After Effects for special effects, particle effects, 'fake' 3d imagery, things like that. So it will take a bit of render time with a laptop, but one of the nice things about After Effects is that it does NOT have real steep requirements for the computer to run it....not compared to some other programs. Even Apple's Motion (which is similar to After Effects) has much steeper requirements. rogue_skydragon
Thanks Alaskacameradude! That is very useful to know.
