# New Formula 1 points system proposed

malcolmpreen
There is a proposal about to extend the number of points awarded in a Formula 1 race for next season. At first it looks radical, but closer analysis shows that there is little change in the percentage of points per position... the major difference being that points are on offer for 9th and 10th place now. To attempt to explain here is a table;

 Code: Posn 2009 2010 Ratio  1st  10   25   2.5  2nd   8   20   2.5  3rd   6   15   2.5  4th   5   10   2.0  5th   4    8   2.0  6th   3    6   2.0  7th   2    5   2.5  8th   1    3   3.0  9th   0    2   -.- 10th   0    1   -.-

As you can see the ratio of points is very similar at each level... so it shouldn't make much difference. Running the figures it would have made no difference to last years title chase.... although a couple of drivers would have swapped places in the middle order.

To my mind, I don't understand the oddity at 7th place... surely that should be 4 points for 2010 ?

And if points are being awarded down to 10th, why don't we extend it and award points to every driver that finishes the race?

no the 7th place ratio is 2.5 and 8th is actually 3.0...its like giving the guys behind a handicap as well as the leaders

ratio works well

If you take the gap from 1st place to 6th place, this system rewards the driver higher, no doubt will put the best cars to the top
