Palm Oil Plantations

spobor
Hi everyone,

I'm not sure what the standards are in other countries but in Australia palm oil can be (and usually is) labelled on all food products as Vegetable Oil. If you don't know about palm oil manufacturing it is definetely something that you should look into.

Essentially large scale deforestation in areas such as Indonesia and Papua New Guinea is occuring so that palm trees can be planted for palm oil production. This is greatly affecting wild populations of Orangutans, Tigers, Elephants and many many other animals. In Sumatra alone an area larger than the American state of Maryland (over 40,000 square Km) will be deforested over the next 20 years.

What I can't get over is the fact that they are removing one the most fertile biomes in existence to harvest a product that has been directly linked with heart disease. If you want to help, it can be as simple as opening a new tab/window and clicking to sign a petition, please do. The following are some links you can take to help fight the good fight.

Well there are definetely more that are out there if your interested. But mainly pay attention when you shop, it doesn't take long to read the ingredients but it does take a while to regrow a rainforest.

In Norway, all food produsents are required to specify use of palm oil explicitly on the label of all food products, since palm oil has been proven to be very unhealthy, and we have a really strict food safety authority in Norway.

Also, lately, produsents of potato chips/crisps have started to use sun flower oil instead of palm in oil in the manufacturing of their products. I think this actually has lead to an increase of sale, since many customers take this quite seriously.

Thats really good to hear. Hopefully someday soon it can be like that in Australia, probably not for a while though. There just seems to be some much beauracratic red tape crap that they have to wade through to do anything!!

Is palm oil grown as a hobby?
What kind of animals live in a palm oil forest?

The palm oil is being grown for lots of different purposes.

They can use it as a biofuel for power stations or cars.

They use it in foodstuffs like margarine, even peanut butter (they usually remove the healthy peanut oils and sell it on it's own and replace is with unhealthy and cheap palm oil).

As to what animals live in a palm forest, the big problem is that they are destroying a habitat that is literally filled with endangered animals (the big one is orangutans).

Yes, hopefully it will.
We are quite lucky to have such a protective government in Norway.
It is a shame that it is not like that everywhere (not to sound selfish in any way, though).
