Tortoise shell

Hi, i have a question- Does tortoise have shell from begining?
I don't know. If yes then did it has same protective characteristics? If not then which organ of their ancestors became the shell? Also what gives a tortoise long life span? plz answer if you can.

The rib cage- it grew larger, and the ribs grew wider, while the gaps in between them shortened. Eventually, the bones met and fused together, which started the whole shell thing. (That's why a broken shell is a very bad problem for a turtle; it's like having broken ribs.

I figure they live so long because they live so slowly.
Just like in trees, the fastest growing ones usually have the shortest lifespans, while the slowest ones live the longest.
