Drag force on a car

Hi all,

I was working on a project regarding the drag force experienced by automobiles. Now, I was wondering ... is there any way in which the drag force on a vehicle can be expressed in terms of the air pressure or bonnet pressure? If not, how do these two pressures (they are different right?) come into play as far as the drag force is concerned? Or is the drag force autonomous to them?

Another thing: how is the drag force related to the fuel consumption?

Thanks Bikerman. Regarding calculating drag, it was quite helpful. The experiment described also opened up a door for me.

Another question I have - regarding lift. How do I calculate the lift on a car?

You are into deep waters now.
Most cars don't generate significant lift. When they do, it is normally by accident of design. Where a car DOES generate lift then it will normally do so because of an incorrectly aligned spoiler, or because of an accidental aerofoil shape in the design of the body.
As for calculating it - I suspect there is no general formula because each instance would be different....
