Reuters reports an interesting nugget in the wake of President Barack Obama's decision to grant Vladimir Putin his wish and kill the Eastern European missile shield:

Shortly after the pullback on the shield programme was announced, Russia's government said Prime Minister Vladimir Putin would meet several U.S. executives on Friday from firms including General Electric, Morgan Stanley as well as TPG, one of the world's largest private equity firms

General Electric may be the company with the closest ties to the Obama administration (if not, GE is second only to Goldman Sachs), and here we see the company benefiting from an abrupt foreign policy change made by President Obama. But GE isn't the only company benefiting. Reuters paints the broader picture:

"U.S. companies have arguably lost out to some European companies in joint ventures, and better diplomacy will likely improve the chances for investors in the strategic sectors of the Russian economy," said Carlo Gallo, senior Russia analyst at London-based consultancy Control Risks.

GE CEO Jeff Immelt sits on Obama's Economic Recovery Advisory Board, and GE owns MSNBC, the network famously friendly to Obama.

These politics are not Chicago-based.
They are symptomatic of the norm in today's Washington.

Bush, before being elected, was a board member of a large drug company.
After being elected, he works on the medicare prescription drug benefit, while doing so, he ensures that the government isn't allowed to negotiate for lower drug prices, like all big insurance firms do.

So, he was on the board of directors for a large drug company, then makes a (permanent) policy that gives the drug companies a huge amount of free money... Nothing fishy about that, right?

Don't take me as just another Bush basher... Nearly all the politicians there are participating in shenanigans like this: nobody ever gets punished for it, and it benefits everybody involved... except for the lowly citizen taxpayer.

MAJOR political reform should be the #1 priority, not healthcare not the war, not the economy. Until this corruption is rooted out, we'll never see good citizen-oriented solutions to these problems!

I don't know ..... Think Perhaps the latest announcement has more to do with Obama Chairing a Nuclear Disarmament Meeting of the UN Security Council on 24 September. But everything is possible. Could be Obama is trying to "make buddies" with Russia hoping to soften Russia as a prelude to the meeting.

Rolling Eyes That seems to be his strategy in a lot of places... Problem is, it's the USA that's becoming soft, not Russia.

Obama's probably also working towards his pet project of making a nuke-free world. How can he not realize that it isn't possible to do so?

Right! I saw a movie last night: "Critical Assembly" where some college kids built their own nuclear bomb for the purposes of "peace" to frighten people into disarming. Their sincerity and motivation took on completely different colours when terrorists stole the bomb.

Think we've discussed this before and it was a good point by you. The nuclear weapons aren't really meant for making war, but to create a strong position to prevent people from attacking you.

If the Russians should see any weaknesses it would be in their interest to exploit them.
