2012 and The IHC
Hello people
The other day I was watching T.V. and saw an ad for The IHC. It basically mentioned doomsday 2012, I thought it was an trailer for the 2012 movie coming out. I went to the site and to my surprise it seems they are taking the 2012 threat seriously.
What are your thoughts on this, are they just working off people's fear and trying to make a quick buck? Or is there actual science behind something happening in 2012?
This probably isnt the first topic in regards to the 2012 topic, but I thought it would be interesting to post about The IHC and discuss it a bit!

What's to discuss?
Who are the IHC? 4 scientists with grandiose sounding resumes, who I have never heard of. Lots of references to prizes and awards but bugger-all references to published works...
Really...dude...did you read the mission statement?
And you really think that this is worthy of serious debate?
ROFLMAO.

LOL, I'm sane common. That was my point but how in the world did they raise enough money to make and publish a full lenth T.V. ad, and get it broadcasted? Usually only serious stuff can get on T.V... and something like this does not seem serious... but it begs the question.
Oh I don't know. I've seen some pretty bizarre ads in my time. I mean, I've seen adverts for a sky fairy, who apparently consists of three different people, talks secretly to men in dresses and gets really pi**ed-off if you don't send him 20 bucks...
I had a quick look around the site. Strange, but it reminded me very much of the chap in the War of the Worlds. Remember? The chap who the hero comes across, who has grandiose dreams of digging tunnels and establishing an underground civilisation to fight back at the Martians? The chap who had only managed to build a 20m tunnel. The sad deluded chap....
Just check out their prospectus (and remember that they reckon it all has to be done for 2112).
a) Subterranean city in Antarctica
b) Floating cities
c) Colonisation of outer space
I mean....words fail me....

Never seen War of the worlds personally... but ya this site seems similiar to the project that was mentioned in the controversial Zeitgeist films... http://www.thevenusproject.com/
Well, much though I think the Venus project is a lot of nonsense, I don't think it belongs in the same category of insanity as this particular example. This one is actually quite 'out there' compared to most similar nonsense.
I'm actually quite surprised they didn't bid for the London 2012 Olympic contracts. Building a few stadia and cycling velodromes would be child's play to a group who plan to launch cities in the oceans and colonise outer space....

It is an ad for the 2012 movie...
And the privacy policy goes to the Sony Pictures Website.

o.0 so Sony believes this stuff??!?!? And is endorsing it?
LOL...well spotted. It took me in...I just thought they were kooks
That explains where the $$ came from
I watched the trailer on TV and I thought looks real but went to their website and it looks like they're promoting the upcoming film 2012.
Just some more information about this ad campaign from Wikipedia which I found somewhat interesting:

| A movie called 2012, directed by Roland Emmerich and starring the actors John Cusack, Danny Glover, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Amanda Peet, Thandie Newton, Oliver Platt and Woody Harrelson is scheduled for release on November 13, 2009. A viral marketing campaign by Sony Pictures Digital Inc. for the film features a website from the fictitious "Institute for Human Continuity" describing the various doomsday scenarios meant to occur in that year: Among these scenarios is a reference to the Nibiru collision. The claims of imminent doom made by Sony Pictures in their fictional publicity for the film are meant as entertainment and are not scientific. Thus, the picture currently on the website's 'about' page shows the European Union headquarters building in Brussels as the IHC's own premises. Another image of their premises, featured in a short television ad, was in fact of London City Hall. |

Gotta love those viral campaigns. I think since District 9 was so successful in theirs that many movie makers will start using it as well. Oh well I find it rather amusing myself.
i saw those ads! They were absolutely brilliant. ^_^; The first time i saw it, the first half of it shocked me so much i had to stop what i was doing and gawk. The first half is brilliantly done - just what you would expect from a slickly orchestrated marketing campaign by a real nutjob cabal.
But then it starts talking about the "IHC", and it's suddenly clear that you've been had. ^_^; The second half, where they start showing the "IHC" in action, with the actors emoting in the control rooms (probably scenes from the movie), gives it away.
i actually had no interest in the movie (i have known about 2012 for a while, but i didn't realize that this was an ad for it at first because i'd never heard about "IHC" in association with the movie), but i am going to have to check it out now, just on the strength of the cleverness of the campaign.
And i did honestly wonder if anyone would actually fall for it. ^_^; (At the end of the ad, it actually shows the standard credits you see in all movie ads, complete with logos for the various movie guilds, but it blinks by quickly so it's easy to miss.)
(Incidentally, the whole "IHC" thing from 2012 strikes me as having been done before... i recall a movie called Tycus that had the same idea.)

This is a funny way of summarizing what I have to say.

I think they recently discovered something about a misprediction. I hate that is scares some people, I mean the end of the world could happen to you any day. They should stop worrying about it so much.
I like the movies that came out because of it tough, except 2012: Supernova. That was a failure indeed.
