Hey,
I just wanted to ask you guys what do you think is the most important thing in your lifes. What would you never wanted to miss in your life, what makes your life special?
Do you live for your friends, family? Do you enjoy discovering new things? Maybe archieving things, accomplish something, ... You like giving and being there for people? Maybe music, art, etc, expressing yourself?
I saw a similair topic ('whats the meaning of life?'), but I found that very much more religious and talking about the life after this one. This topic is more about what you enjoy the most. I hope I posted this in the right subforum.

I live for three things:
-God and my religion (Islam)
-Learning and discussing religion and spirituality
-Socialising with others
You need to tell us what's important in your life too, joostvane!
Peace.

This concept will be one of the central themes of my new religion/philosophy/belief system...
The French refer to it as 'Raison d'ętre'.
A person's reason for life is extremely important, not only does it give that person a purpose for existence, the variety of them gives the universe a reason for existence.
That's why it's important that different people have different things as the most important things in their lives.
For me personally, it's horses. They are the most important thing in my life, and define much of my purpose.
There are, however, various things that tend to distract us from our true purposes, perverting our Raison d'ętre until we believe that they are the most important thing in the world.
These things are not intrinsically bad... but we must realize that they are actually no more than survival instincts -- another way for our bodies to control us. We must realize that we have other, higher purposes than these:
-Greed: A survival instinct that makes us want to hoard resources... It also gives birth to materialism... Many people are ruined by spending their whole lives chasing after money, and things they only want because they were marketed to them.
-Proliferation: Yes, it is good to care for your children and your family, and there's nothing wrong with wanting a baby to take care of... But this should not be your purpose. It leads to a boring, and ultimately pointless life if this is 'the most important thing in your life'.
-Gluttony/Hedonism: You should definitely take time to enjoy life, especially the good parts. BUT, when this enjoyment becomes your purpose, it leads down a dark road that will eventually end with a wasted life.
There are probably others, but that's it for now.
I would go into why it's important for everyone to have unique and special reasons to live, but I don't want to yet, not until after I've made the whole belief system ready to be released.
Peace of mind.
Now that I think of it, it has pretty much remained unchanged back when I first pondered about it- probably when I was still edging from adolescence to adulthood.

Ditto! Also love and companionship, including pets, the stuff that gives a person a warm and fuzzy feeling around the solar plexus and make you feel good to be alive.
Well... Many people would probably choose family. I do not have very strong relationships with my family, however, so I will not choose that. Many other people would probably choose a god. I do not believe in any god, so I will not choose that. I think the best way to determine what is important to a person is to see where they allocate their time and money at. I spend a lot of time at school and a lot of my money paying for school. So I guess you can say that math is very important to me. I also spend a lot of time listening to and playing music. I also spend a lot of money on musical equipment, CDs, and concerts, so I'd also have to say that music is important to me. I also do like my friends. I am blessed with some good friends, so I'll choose them.
I guess I live before I do. That's not to sound emo or anything. But I guess I live life because it's worth living. The many small things, the people that we come across, everything. It makes life really interesting and that everyone has a different experience.
The important stuff in my life are mainly the people around me, and maybe that's it.
And of course to have lotsa fun everyday. The more laughter I have and everyone have, the more life is worth living. XD

I wonder... do you think your life is better because of this, or worse?

Well... I'm not sure what you're talking about? Are you talking about me not having a good relationship with my family, not believing in a god, having good friends, spending a lot of money on school, or spending a lot of money on music? All or some of it? At any rate, I'll just say my life is better because of this because I am happy with my life... Although I should add that I forgot to put outdoor activities because I actually spend quite a bit of money on those...
I think that people will tend to be happy if they spend their time and resources on things that make them happy. For you, that's horses. Although I think it's funny (for me) that I have very few fears. I'll do almost anything. I like to "live on the edge." But the one thing that I am afraid of (and there's very few things that I'm afraid of), is horses. I'm absolutely terrified of those beasts.
Only people with enough time to spare can even think of such things as what is most important in life
most of the ppl on earth are just grinding away to live with three meals a day
I think in that way the most important thing in life to the majority of humans in this planet earth is to just survive!

^.^
I guess that's reasonable. They're much bigger, much faster, and much stronger than humans. If they weren't so peaceful and friendly, they'd be extremely dangerous. (As opposed to being slightly dangerous like they are now.) The only time you need to be afraid of a horse is when the horse is scared or angry.

Hardly... Most of them can survive just fine. They waste their time trying to improve their lives without first considering what they want out of life.
A starving man can contemplate what's most important in his life just as much as a CEO.
More so, in fact, because the starving man has fewer distractions, and fewer 'important' things to do.
Read Thoreau sometime.
Life changes, the things that make you happy when you are young, may not make you happy when you get older. Say for instance friends, when I was young and in Highschool and College, my friends were very important to me, now that I'm older I have very few friends, and I see them very seldom, so although I love them and they are important to me, they are not the meaning of life. I'm not a religious person so religion is out, but I am a spiritual person, so my meditations and relationship with the force of life that surrounds all of us, is important. I can say that I would have thought someone was nuts if they told me that 20 years ago
I love my little Poodle Jasper very much, and he is in his final years of not months to weeks in life, and he is the most important thing in my life, but one day fairly soon, I fear, he will be gone, and that will no longerr be so. He makes me happier than any of my friends to be around, but as much as I love and care for him, he is not the meaning of my life.
My father is 79 years old and dying of congestive heart failure, he tells me all the time, the he just keeps living, just for life itself, to be alive, and each day he wakes up and spends his days alive and with my mom, and his cat, he is greatful. So maybe the what is important to me these days is the gratitude I feel for just being alive, and having the time given to spend another day on planet earth.
Most important thing in life is to be good to all
What a great question. One that I will answer, as a great man answered before me.
"What is best in life?", asks the Khitan General.
His Khitan Warrior answers, "The open steppe, a fleet horse, falcons at your wrist, and the wind in your hair."
"Wrong! Ophois, what is best in life?", replies the General.
"To crush your enemies, see them driven before you, and to hear the lamentations of their women!"
A wave of satisfaction washes over me.
On a side note.
Ocalhoun, have you read a book called The Gigantic Book of Horse Wisdom (2007) by Thomas Meagher and Buck Brannaman?
If not, you should check it out.
"Conquering the world on horseback is easy; it is dismounting and governing that is hard."
A really good read, especially for anyone who loves horses. And conquest.

Haven't read that particular one... Though I have exhausted the equine non-fiction sections of four public libraries. ^.^
