I went to my first race meeting for years last weekend, in Pontefract.
Took the camera along to do a bit of snapping.
Beautiful creatures, those racehorses....super-fit & superbly turned out.

Great job on taking these photos, some of them are very good!
My favorites were the last two. I think they are two of the best because they focus on one horse and one rider. In many of the others, you have a lot of the crowd, cars, and other photographers standing around in the background. I'm sure it was probably hard to do away with all that due to you were in the stands (I'm assuming anyways).
Also the focus was done nicely on the last too. Still a lot of things you need to work on, though I am no professional photographer, so I don't really feel qualified enough to give any constructive feedback.
You are getting a lot better at photography, keep it up.
I like the second one the best. The composition really came together there. Also, the 3rd one is quite interesting. It is super busy, but there is some semblance of organization there. I might have framed it differently, but it isn't bad. Thanks for sharing your photos.
The third WAS difficult to frame....I played around for ages until I settled on this one.
Not perfect, but the image deserved persevering with, I thought.
Thanks for the comments guys.
Some of these photos are really nice. I can tell you've gotten better at getting proper motion blur in your photos since you tried with the scooter. You must've had a very high shutter speed to get effectively freeze the motion of the horses like this.
Superb!
What equipment did you use?
The third looks like it would be pretty hard to set it up just right.
I'd also like to point out the first two. Those are also quite good. The first one is almost perfect. If you could get the background a bit more blurred out, this photo would look amazing.
Once again, good job.
Edit:
On the 8th photo, what is with the #7 horse? A little above the butt, there is like a checkered pattern in it's fur. Is this common for racing horse or is this just a weird reflection type thing?
Thank you all....it's a Sony A300 dslr camera, but on these shots I was using a 300mm zoom lens.
The patterns on the horses seems to be quite a new thing; no. 12 (in the same pic) has a zig-zag on it's rear!
There are prizes now at the meetings for the best turned out horse & jockey, so it may be something related to that?
Oh I see, I wasn't aware they had started doing such things to racing horses. It's quite cool if you ask me. I though the checkered type pattern in the horses was very unique.
The zig zag is interesting too.
Nice photos. Haven't you done any wild life/nature photos ?
Beautiful pictures! I'm wondering...what shutter speed were you shooting on? Was it fixed for the entire shoot?
Nevertheless, great job.

not fixed, no....I varied from race to race, to experiment with different ideas
Some worked, others didn't.

Not really yet, no....I think my camera may be too slow to capture wild animals / birds sharp enough to be good enough. My friend has a great Canon camera & his wildlife shots are easily as good as any pro photos.
One day though....

You're not the first one I see who chose Sony (and with great results). Is there a reason? Was it after trying out more obvious or popular choices (Canon, Nikon, especially)?
some really nice shots you have here, really love the second and the last shot. Can almost feel like i'm at the track. That sony camera is really good, cheers
Beautiful pictures.
And this comes from a guy who's not much into still photography.

My choice was made for me really....I just couldn't afford anything more expensive!
It was the cheapest on the market at the time I bought it, but I read lots of reviews first to ensure I wasn't buying absolute rubbish.
Maybe one day I'll get a Canon/Nikon dslr, but I may need to win the Lottery first

Thank you my friend!
