Growing Lithops

miacps
I've recently become fascinated with a new type of plant; Lithops, aka Living Stones.

Here's a web page with some info on them: http://www.lithop.supanet.com/

I ordered some seeds online and have a well drained plastic garden bowl with a real nice vermiculite/sand/sponge rock/potting soil mix ready to go. Can't wait! Very Happy

Does anyone have any tips for growing them outside in a subtropical climate?

Wow, I've never heard of them. Be sure and show us a picture of yours when they start growing. I would love to see them.

Will do, but it'll probably take a year for them to get any real size from seeds. Smile

Yeah... go to great lengths to protect them from bugs and/or animals. Years of growth can be taken away in moments, and they never look the same afterward.

they look like brains that have been sliced in half...

I tried some last year in a planter with a cactus, indoors. They did not survive. The cactus is doing fine. Don't know why I lost the little lithops.

hahah, so true.

I've seen these plants before but never knew what they were called. They seem like a great plant for me since i'm always forgetting to water my plants. I really have no idea how my bonsai tree is still alive after two years.

I hadn't even considered pests. Thanks, I'll have to keep that in mind.

I got my first signs of germination today.

I was surprised at how fast these things sprout. It only took around 3 days.
