http://www.simplemachines.org/

I do suggest it

andfor wat u want i suggest the PHPBB portal skin (i never said i didn't note: past tense :p use PHPBB)
grief
what do you mean by the main menu? Do you mean like the navigation links - search, memberlist, etc?
budazz

Xavier

hmm, I should try SMF out. So far I've used only phpbb.

why does PHPBB don't have this custom user title thing? Like if you don't want your title as "Frihost Wannabe" or something else, you can change it to something you want..

dont know?...lol Laughing

The reason you'd use phpbb over any other form atm is its plugins/modules and things. What you'll find is most forums softwares are pretty much the same thing, some have more default features than others, some a more secure (phpbb is very secure-- constantly updating the security on very minor issues that wouldn't even be considered in other peices of software!).

To add your own menu to a phpbb layout you do it in the template. I believe the file that you edit is something like... header.tpl

Basically header.tpl is html code that will be stuck in your site before the phpbb code. (you can actually stick the phpbb forum inside another site design-- in the content area, by using the header.tpl and the footer.tpl files Smile)

You can do all sorts of things by messing around with the templates... its really cool. I do recommend phpbb if you want your forum to be extensive... however, you might just as easily want something less... heavy. In that case I'd recommend some of the other forums packages (like the SMF one they mentioned). They tend to have less features and less modularity, however, they do have a lighter default feel and a lighter footprint.

Cheers.
Ash.

edit: you can easily add that custom user title thing to phpbb by installing one of the many thousands of mods out there... there are whole websites dedicated to phpmods... check em out! (but dont go too crazy :p)

i do not know what you mean

You see, phpbb heavily relies on templates, being those files that get parsed with a .php file and produce what you see. To add static content, all you should do (if you dare to) is find the templates for the index file and modify them by hand; that way phpbb will not touch them and they will stay like that for as long as you want.
My recommendation on that? Don't erase anything, just put the content into comment tags: <!-- for opening and --> for closing, along with the date and a description on the modification, so you can remember when you did that and why.

Go to phpbb.com if you have any questions about phpbb, php, etc. At de community (forum) they can help you very well! I'm almost sure about it, that they can give you an answer.

And at phpbb.com you can find modifications (mods). With these you can change your forum at many different ways. Try it out, I should say. Smile

And an option is: phpbbhacks.com (or something like that. i'm not sure if it's correct. otherwise use google) Here you can find many different mods.

There is such a thing available in Zarath's shop mod, where you can buy the right to choose your own rank, however, it's up to the admin to decide what features he wants the forum to have.

I also prefer phpBB. It's very easy to use. Not only for the moderator, also for the visitors of the website. It's also the most famous forum software, on the most places on the internet where are forums, you see phpBB. Everyone know how it work.

It's not the ranking i was talking about, its just the user title.. choosing a ranking and changing your User title are very far from each other... besides how can you choose your ranking if your just a member..

what do you mean?...you mean even if you got only 5 post it will make you a frihoster...that's impossible...well anyway dont reply anymore...
back to the topic..."PHPBB" Arrow Idea
grief
yes, it's possible with Zarath's mod, but you need to have enough points to buy it which you probably won't have with 5 posts...

But as you said, back to topic. Gaspar asked about creating your own main menu. If you meant the navigation in the header, i'ts pretty easy to do that. Go to overall_header.tpl in your template(s) that you're using, and look for the navigation list, which looks something like this, depending on what template you're using:

Quote:
<a href="{U_FAQ}" class="gensmall"><img src="templates/subSilver/images/icon_mini_faq.gif" width="13" height="13" border="0" alt="{L_FAQ}" hspace="3" />{L_FAQ}</a>
<a href="{U_SEARCH}" class="gensmall"><img src="templates/subSilver/images/icon_mini_search.gif" width="13" height="13" border="0" alt="{L_SEARCH}" hspace="3" />{L_SEARCH}</a>
<a href="{U_MEMBERLIST}" class="gensmall"><img src="templates/subSilver/images/icon_mini_members.gif" width="13" height="13" border="0" alt="{L_MEMBERLIST}" hspace="3" />{L_MEMBERLIST}</a>

And on and on. Then you'd have to put a similar link, say to page.php It will look like
Code:
<a href="page.php" class="gensmall"><img src="templates/subSilver/images/some_icon.gif" width ="13" height="13" border="0" alt="page" hspace="3" />page</a>

But I have a feeling that's not what you meant. What did you mean?

I tried SMF and I think it's really cool. PHPBB is really cool, too. But I think SMF is welly underground (unknown) so it seems more original.
