Covered pickups

Ankhanu
This is a question for guitar gearheads. I've never really come across any information on the subject, but I'm curious as to whether pickup covers (specifically metal ones) affect tone.

Given how pickups work, I can see how a metal pickup cover could affect the magnetic field of the pickup, but at the same time, if it's a non-ferrous metal, it may simply have no effect. Anyone have first hand comparative experience (ie. same pickup with/without covers, same amp, etc)?

Metal covers on humbuckers, in some cases, will make them squeal and feed back a lot. I had this problem on a Les Paul copy I had a couple of years ago. It came right after I took them off. It sounded a lot better without them too, and the Coilsplit worked (it didnt before then)
