I recently finished the second of a 2 novel series by author Leon uris. Redemption being the first, and Trinity the second. They both dealt with the "Irish Question" beginning around 1860 or so, up to the Easter Rebellion.
Both works are billed as fiction as the characters are fiction, but the events they are attributed with are not. This a history series in the guise of a novel, and the effect makes for a very good read.
Being Irish myself, with immediate family born in one of the areas described in the books, I found the books enlightening and entertaining, not to mention more than a bit touching.
All in all both are a very good read and well worth your time.
