An interesting idea

Arty
I just thought of an interesting web-application that can be used by everyone.
Almost everyone who is internet-savvy has heard of blogs, and blogging applications like wordpress.
And a lot of people online currently microblog as well, using twitter or another similar online app.

So, why don't we design an application like twitter that can be uploaded to the internet like wordpress, open source so that everyone can fully customize and mod it, and also able to connect to every other website using that application.

So, instead of using a single social networking site like twitter, facebook, or myspace, people can just install this web application themselves. It'll be kind of like social networking, but on multiple sites, instead of a single site.
And also, there can be many separate websites that will "host" this application, for people who don't have their own host or aren't experienced enough to set up their own site.

I don't think I am really explaining this well, so does anyone have any idea what I am talking about?

It's like saying why don't we create an open source ebay or facebook, etc, etc. Basically, they own the general market. The ONLY way to take them on is with niche marketing, but then you limit your population. And only devoted people are going to know about the niche site, reducing it's effectiveness. If I want to buy anime (I've never watched/read a single piece of it) I'd go to amazon or ebay not some niche site that I'd have to google to find. The same applies with twitter!

Yea, that would never get off the ground. The only reason the blog software works is because there isn't one person who blogs everything.
You can't create a site with Twitter like functionality and hope to compete with Twitter, it won't happen.
While open source is great, something it just won't work with. No one will want to use it because Twitter has more users, and you'll never have more users then Twitter because Twitter has more users. It just won't work.
Same with eBay. eBay and Twitter (and Google) own the markets they are in, you can't hope to compete with them.

It might be more feasible to implement the system as a plugin for other established platforms (Wordpress, Drupal, etc.) rather than creating a new one.

"able to connect to every other website using that application" -> this may sound simple, but it's not. Are you going to have a central server that stores everything so that everyone can pull from the central server? Then it is not much different from current twitter and friends. If the servers connect peer-to-peer, there will be problems with security, load balancing, processing power, probing for interesting servers, etc.

It is actually not much different from blogging + syndicating with RSS.
