Where is the best country for education?

razum2um
There are so many talks what the previous educational system (in USSR) was awful. So we (Russian) need to rebuilt it, how it is in Europe and so on.
I just think it's non-patriotism.

Do you think your educational system is the best?

What I heard about education in the USSR was not that bad at all. It had advantages with respect to other successful systems that I had a chance to work in, such as the British and the French ones. And it was FREE in all the possible meanings of this word.

The system did produce many prominent academics. Many of them relocated abroad though, which is a loss for the countries in the former USSR that cannot be compensated at the moment. It turned out that the Soviet system was providing highly capable specialists for other countries for free, which is not a drawback in itself but a consequence of a deficiency in the Soviet managerial system that could not appropriately reward educated people in the USSR.

I think it is not an efficient method to start copying someone else's educational system even if it works better now. Probably it would be even better to try to come back to that old system because it is more Russian in spirit and has associated local traditions.

Notably, in many developed countries it becomes easier to get education, from primary to postgraduate, without paying any money. This reflects current social and economical tendencies in the world. A few ex-USSR countries like Estonia found their place thanks to joining the EU. Unlike the countries in the EU, Russia must understand and win its place in the world order. For Russia, improving the international position would solve many problems including the educational havoc.

Personally, I don't think that Russia would go this way under the present leadership. It is as clerical as the USSR government used to be in the good old days, including it's use of media for propaganda purposes Sad

This is hilarious. Very Happy
Can you please let me know of an educational system that does not put stress on quality? I thought quality was an inherent idea behind education.

What's true, I think, is that different educational systems use different means to achieve quality. From what you say, it seems that in Malaysia, "quality" stands for "being hard". That's a common thing, really. Smile

I think that polish education system is very good. You can study for free and lerning is on heigh level. I know many peopel who leave Poland and continue study in school in other country and they don't have any problems, they're better student that students from this country. But it is only my opinion;)

It sounds like the Polish system is very close to the Soviet one. Maybe it would serve as a good example of how a country preserved its education after the end of the communist rule. I think Russian education was in a bigger trouble after the collapse of the Soviet Union.

That's not really an answer. You cannot contribute to building a country's educational system by running from it to another country.

First of all, I think you cannot generalize the entire education system good or bad for a country. It entirely depends on the subject/specilization area. There are various subjects which are good in one country and bad in others. Also cost is a major factor in procuring higher education.

I think you can. Take a look at university league tables on the net and you'll find about 80 out of the 100 best universities are said to be in the US. This means the higher education system in the US is the best world-wide.

Personally, I believe that such tables are always biased and should include more European universities to be fair.

Now, about Russia, I guess only the Moscow State University is among the top 100, and it lags in the tail of the list. This is an awful thing for such a big country as Russia. You may not know, but in the 20th century this country enjoyed much better performing universities. So, this poor performance may be seen as the failure of the higher educational system.

It is natural to ask how this performance can be brought back at least to the level where it used to be when the economy wasn't struggling for survival.

It's not about individual students deciding on where to go for their undergraduate studies.

Sorry man, I will still stick to my point that the best depends on the subject. As for your US example,
I can tell you that it is no match when it comes in the field of medicine. Most of the major degrees in medicines are from UK (like FRCOG, MRCOG etc). Also UK has some renouned universities like Oxford, Cembridge which are elite since long. As for Technical universities, a lot of good universities are in Japan, China and Germany. If you look at the IEEE publications (Which is the best technical journal in the world), you will see that most of them are non US. But if you go for rating system, tables and papers, then not only in education but in all front US is the best. The cause is obvious.

P.S Please donot mark me as an anti US campeigner. I have nothing against them personaly. Very Happy

Me neither. Smile I'm more convinced now that your point deserves respect.

What about the progress of this thread then? Possibly trivialising the first chap's question: Is it possible to adopt an educational system for Russia (that is, to restructure the existing one so that it receives advantages of the system being adopted)?

To me, this seems unlikely given all the current problems of Russian society, economy and politics.

http://www.pisa.oecd.org/pages/0,3417,en_32252351_32236191_1_1_1_1_1,00.html is good place to see students performance from different countries. There are many countries and in 2006, the best results was from Finland.
But you can read more about this from their homepage. Maybe it's gives a little help. Very Happy

Thanks for the link. I heard that such a survey existed but didn't had a chance to look into it. The 2006 survey was published in December 2007. The next survey is the 2009 one. It seems it will take until the end of 2010 to complete it. Nice to know about the performance of Finland. I think the survey would make a good bedtime reading. I especially like the way it describes statistical analysis methods. It allows to understand some things we see in news in their true context.

we are getting there but so far we dont have the best education system in my country. i think america and england have the best education systems. cause people go there alot and they come back better equiped and they are able to work anywhere in the world. thats how it should be. education is suppose to make life easy for us but then in some contries like mine its tough, terribly tough but we will get to the top cause there are some systems being put in place by some great people and with time everything will favour the people.

In terms of testing and an education provided to all citizens, Finland is number one. They have received the top scores in math and language proficiency tests.

United Kingdom of course there are so many world's greatest universities and colleges such as University of Cambridge, University of Oxford, University of College London (UCL), Imperial College London, King's College etc and more....

Well, I went to college in Argentina...that's were I am from...and education there is completely free. I am now in the US continuing with graduate school...and I have to say I am a little bit disappointed. I think the education I got in Argentina is 10 better than what I am getting here. Also I have interacted with lots of college students here...or recent graduates...and...I'm not impressed.

Hmm..tough question. The US has opprotunity..but the summer vacation is where they fail. All of that learning just goes *poof!*. I really like Germany, thier system rocks. all year round, 2 weeks off each month; Cmon US..get a move on education.

Uk and US are good for education Smile

I think education in Finland is really good. I have seen some university websites and I think they offer a good education system.

Another is US. They have a great education system.

Each system has their pro's and con's. I personally think that that system is inferior and that the U.S. has a far better system. First off, we're in school longer. So you're in school about 24 weeks whereas most schools in the U.S. are 32-33 (depending on if you're in the quarter system or the semester system).

Plus, summers are important... very important. To slackers, it's just a time to sit around and maybe get a job to earn money. To people who are academically concerned, it is also crucial. First off, all universities offer summer classes so that you can stay on top of things. You can take advantage of summer classes... Or you can do what many other people do and that's get a summer internship. This is extremely important to people and they only get it because they have 3 months to do it. Many people get industry experience before graduating. Many people who are prospective scientists and in good standing will get internships with professors at the school and help them with their research during the summer. And then if they're good, they'll continue to do research during the school year and so many people graduate with their undergraduate degree having gotten their name on a published scientific journal!

So if you're serious about your education, then summers are very important. Plus, many people also take it as an opportunity to do extensive travel. That's what I do. I need my summers to do that... But I also study during the summer to make sure I retain knowledge.

Hmmm... Can you give me a link of where you read that, because my sister studied in Germany and she never had 2 weeks off each month.

I suppose education of America and Britain is the best. Anyway it can't be that of China, which is unsatifying and always blamed. Oxford, Cambrige, Standford and Harvard are the most famous universities in China Very Happy
