House Cats Know What They Want And How To Get It From You

Voodoocat
Anyone that has a cat already knows this, but now your intuition is backed by science!

Apparetly cats can modify their purring and meowing to convince their owners to feed them:

Quote:
The rather crafty felines motivate people to fill their food dishes by sending something of a mixed signal: an urgent cry or meowing sound embedded within an otherwise pleasant purr. The result is a call that humans generally find annoyingly difficult to ignore.

The rest of the article is a hoot!

That's very interesting. It's nice when we can get some facts that explain something like that. Cats can be very manipulative and it is interesting that a bunch have learned the same technique independently. I wonder if it is somehow encoded in their genetics that they might find that sound to be most effective.

Though Bikerman would vehemently disagree with me, all you have to do is watch them.

Take an example of two horses I know:
The first one, Rustler figured out on his own that when the gate isn't latched, he could push it open.
Out of 10 or so, he's the only one that would do that.
However, one day, the other horse, Blaze, saw Rustler push the gate open, and ever since then, both of them will push open the gate if they have the chance.

Now, you can explain that away however you like, but I see that as evidence that Blaze learned how to do something new by watching somebody else do it, which would require thought on a level we often don't credit animals with.
