I think it's easier to learn chess from a friend than to read a website. The chess sites I like the best are the owns with live broadcasts and analysis of games.

http://www.chesscenter.com/twic/twic.html
http://www.gmchess.com/

might be of interest.

Right now there is an interesting tournament going on in Biel. Many of the top young stars are playing; Radjabov, Carlsen etc. Check out:

I love chess,I love the feeling of sitting there quietly and geting control of the whole world.By the way I love the game of go most.I think it is the greatest game of human's.

gheh.. get ready for Vista

The new windows vista has a build in chessgame Smile
now what do we think about that :p..

I tried it when i had a vista beta running, and i must say, it looks pretty good.

I learned chess by spending countless hours in the chess club after school. I love the game, and yes, I believe it is a sport. An intellectual sport, but a sport none the less. Chess is a great way to sharpen your brain and to compete with other people without physical strain.

I love chess too! I like to use the opening move King's Gambit but only managed to pull it off against weaker opponents! LOL! Laughing

Chess is my friends' favourite past time. Nevertheless, I still prefer Go (Weiqi in Chinese, Go in Japanese and Baduk in Korean). It is something I would recommend any chess player to take a look of.

Chess a sport? HA.

Just kidding, guys. I was one of those guys sitting around in the chess club. After awhile, I thought we needed new opponents, so I went through the paper work to make it a varsity sport. Laughing Yep, I was our schools first chess captain and got a varsity letter in chess! That made me REAL popular with the jocks! Laughing

After high school, I never really played much since it was hard to find good competition. One thing I've noticed lately is that it's unusual to find games described in descriptive notation, which I grew up with. The algebraic notation is meaningless to me. Crying or Very sad

This is how I learned and what is ingrained in my head.
1.P-K4 P-K4
2.N-KB3 N-QB3
3.B-QN5 P-QR3
4.BxN
I can follow a listing like that without a board very easily.

But this,
1. e4 e5
2. Nf3 Nc6
3. Bb5 a6
4. BxN
Forget it.

Do most of you players use the algebraic?
joxang
algebraic definitely. descriptive notation is too confusing and old fashioned...BUT if you write down your move before you play it, it's useful in tournaments against annoying notation peekers.

i used to play chess soooo much a few years ago but i gave up in favour of music. can't remember when my last proper match was Sad...

Chess is definatly a sport and perhaps one of the few sports that can be participated in over the internet.

humm I wonder when the first Internet Olympics will be?

I like chess but I don't think it can be classified as a sport event. You hardly move a muscle playing it Very Happy

On a different note, some said playing chess is about the test of your memory. The more and longer you can remember, the more chance you can win. Is it true?
Rsam
Haven't played chess in the longest time, I like playing it when I get the chance though. I don't consider it a sport, no physicality required.

Off the top of my head, I'd say the only memory intensive aspect is memorizing the opening book moves...that can be pretty intensive, but on the other hand, it isn't necessary to play well.

To me it is more a game of spatial aptitude...Being able to visualize the board x moves ahead of the current position...

I use algebraic notation.

Like joxang suggested, descriptive notation is too intricate and detailed for my liking. Why use so many letters, numbers, and symbols if you can get away with using only two or three? Wink
ryukenden
I think chess needs some IQ to play. I love chess a lot as it is very entertaining and brainstorming. I sometimes play in yahoo chess online and it is quite good. I will consider entering some tournaments later on.

I guess it's what you learn. Algebraic looks like gibberish to me, while descriptive is exactly that....descriptive. If I look at the examples below,
a quick glance at the descriptive tells me more than minutes studying the algebraic. I'm not arguing which is "better", just an old codger shaking his head...

Any old timers out there who made the switch?

Short Algebraic
1. e4 e5
2. Nf3 Nf6
3. Nxe5 Nxe4
4. Qe2 Nf6??

Long Algebraic
1. e2-e4 e7-e5
2. Ng1-f3 Ng8-f6
3. Nf3xe5 Nf6xe4
4. Qd1-e2 Ng8-f6??

Descriptive
1. P-K4 P-K4
2. N-KB3 N-KB3
3. NxP NxP
4. Q-K2 N-KB3?? Laughing
