Stable Phpbb2

Hi guys i have always liked phpbb2 and not liked phpbb3 much mainly because of its complicated user interface and many of my users said that they were finding it very difficult to cope up with phpbb3...!!

So what i would like to ask you now is that.. Will i be able to install a stable package of phpbb2 now and run it as a forum...?? Please see that many established sites are still running phpbb2 version and face no problems..!! I think Frihost is still using phpbb2..!! Cool Cool

So if it is possible where can i get a stable phpbb2 download and what all mods should i install so as to prevent getting spammers which is a major problem i am facing even with phpbb3..!!

Also one another thing..!! I could read the following in www.phpbb.com

Quote:
The reason for the early retirement is the PHP Group's decision to retire PHP 4. phpBB 2.0 mainly runs on the PHP 4 codebase and it would be unwise to require people to have an unsupported version of PHP installed in order to use phpBB.

So is there any security risks in using phpbb2 further...??
adri
Well, you can download the last stable version of phpbb2 from my host:
http://adriaan.frihost.net/phpBB-2.0.23.zip

For extra Security:

  • Put the Member Activtion from "None" to "User" (which sends an email to the user with an URl) or to "Admin" (you have to decide if you let him/her in).
  • I would also read this article and see what you find usefull.

What is the risk in keeping the member activation by email...???

Also after installing phpbb2 should i leave config.php permissions as 666 or change it back to 755..??
adri
Well Member activation is pretty save Wink

I would change it back to 755 (but make sure that it works with 755 otherwise but it back to 666).

EDIT: Also, go to your profile and make sure that your emailadress isn't visible (standard is visible Confused )

It is recommended that you get the latest version of Phpbb, the 2.X series is no longer supported by the team who create the software. There is a lot of changes and security openings that were patched and closed.

It's a modification, search the official phpbb-forum at http://phpbb.com (Go to Community and to the phpbb2 forums Smile )
