I use Mozila's Thunderbird for email which generally suited my needs just fine.

Sometimes however, when I open Thunderbird (cold PC start or hibernate resume) Thunderbird seems to lock up my internet connection for up to a minute or two. I have no idea whatsoever what it is doing. There is no hard drive activity during this time. After it releases my internet connection, all is fine.

Any ideas?????

Well if a computer is in hibernation the NIC card (adapter) would be disabled until it loads back up. Hibernation shuts most stuff down during sleep mode.

Are you sure that's just not Windows XP? I've had cases where it takes forever for the network stuff to start working. The start menu is also usually affected. If you can click the thunderbird icon quickly though it may appear that thunderbird is doing it.
