I;m currently reading this very interesting book by Arthur Herman who is Ph.D. in history from Johns Hopkins and currently Smithsonian Institute. It is about how as the title describes we owe our gratitude to the Scots for invented just about everything in the modern world including democracy. I;m not that far it at the moment but regardless it is very interesting (especially if you're inot history) and I highly recomend it.
"How The Scots Invented the Modern World"
I read a book a couple of years ago about how the Irish saved the world from the dark ages by preserving documents and archives which had been destroyed elsewhere in Europe, bringing the world back to civilisation.
It sounds similar to the book you are reading- maybe they have a whole series
"How the French/Spanish/Indians invented the modern world..."
