Can you live longer, but die before your twin?

Can you live longer, but die before your twin?

These hypothetical twins were born at exactly the same time, I won't go into details but it was, to say the least, uncomfortable for the mother!

So is it possible for one twin to live to say 80 years of age, and the other live to 90 years of age but the twin who died at 90 died before the one who died at 80. The guy who dies ar 80 even attends the funeral of his twin!

IS THIS POSSIBLE?

Using relativity principles, this seems possible. All that it requires is for one twin to take a very fast tour through space. This sounds like a question which would arise from the twins paradox.
Bikerman
Yes.
Twin A would move, relative to twin B, at a high proportion of the speed of light (say in a super dooper spaceship). When twin B returns after a few years he finds that twin A is now 10 years older than him.

There is an interesting article HERE

Perfect answers, I concur wholey. But can anyone really explain why?

Also does anyone think it is impossible? Why?

Lets get some debates going!

There is no debate to have - Special and General relativity describe what would happen precisely. How do we know? It has been tested many times. The GPS makes routine use of time dilation (both special relativistic TD due to velocity, and general relativistic TD due to the difference in gravity potential between the satellites and the receivers.

I am perfectly aware what Special relativity says and how time dialation is created. But however I must say that of course there is a debate to be had. Concidering that we know for certain that Special relativity is wrong!

What if the twins were not people, what if they were electrons and were tiny and quantum effects were to be taken into account? We know for sure that special relativity fails.

I'm more trying to get a debate going rather than have people say true or false.

Both special and general relativity fail at the quantum level. This is well known. The question was about twins, however, which are at the 'macro' scale and therefore obey SR/GR.
If you want a theory which works in both quantum and macro physics then you had better polish up your maths because both superstring theory and Loop Quantum Gravity (the two main 'contenders' for a GUT) are incredibly mathematical and well beyond the scope of these boards...

Not if we don't let them be!

OK...

describes a p-brane in {d} dimensional spacetime, using p space coordinates {yi} along the p-brane, and (d-1-p) space coordinates {xa} orthogonal to the p-brane.

Discuss....

(see the problem?)
The simple fact is that at the moment we have two theories that work wonderfully at their own scales - QM at the quantum and Relativity at the macro. Until we can quantise gravity we can't fit the two theories together. It seems obvious to us that there must be an overarching theory (but there is no a-prior reason why it should be so). Both superstring and LQG are attempts to sort out this fundamental problem but both are very highly mathematical and to attempt to describe them in 'everyday' language is going to lead to major problems.
Perhaps the most readable attempt is the Brian Greene book - 'The Elegant Universe'.
