What are we mostly made of?

Neilos
Us, as people. Or even anything you can think of... a cup, a rock, a golfball, a planet, the sun...

What are we mostly made of?
Afaceinthematrix
We are made of many things. We are made up of organic matter. Our bodies contain a lot of carbon, oxygen, nitrogen, and hydrogen...

Is the same true for a cup? What about the planet? Or the Sun?

I am looking for a single specific answer that can be applied to all things. But I am interested in what people have to say.

So once again. What are we mostly made of?

Hint: You could answer with just 1 word and hit it perfectly on the mark!

Not really. I suppose the answer you want is 'nothing' in that the majority of matter is composed of 'empty space'. That does not, however, address the issue of the quantum fields within 'empty space'.
Neilos
Awesome, the answer I was going for was 'space'!

Space is the answer I would have assumed, I am unaware of how

would affect this answer, would you care to explain? I am very interested!

Normally we regard space as 'empty'. If, however, you take a really close look then what you see is a seething mass of virtual particle-antiparticle pairs popping in and out of existence. This can be explained using Quantum Field Theory.

Ahh yes I am aware of the principle. It is used by Hawking to explain the thermodynamics of black holes I just had to read...

and I got it straight away.

Darn, ok I conceed that Space may not be the correxct answer.

Anyone else have any other ideas?

Well then you need to be more specific. You said, "Us, as people. Or even anything you can think of... a cup, a rock, a golfball, a planet, the sun... "

That implied that you wanted to know what people are made up of, or what anything that you choose is made up of... So I answered what people are made up of and then decided not to answer what a cup or rock is made up of because there are many types of cups and rocks...
Neilos
That's ok, there are lots of ways to answer the question. I was interested in lots of different answers, not just what I expected to hear.

Bikerman was more 'on-the-ball' than me by

I hadn't even thought of it but should have seen it before he sideswiped me with it! I was more trying to drum up some activity in the science part of the forum with some dabates. So all answers are welcome.

Funny, I'm actually working on an answer to that, as part of the religion I'm formulating...

No details yet though. There are parts of it I haven't figured out yet, and they'll affect other parts, for sure. I want it to be complete before I release it for 'peer review'.

I think the answer is "QUARKS", Is that right?
sigT
Water, about 70%, not precisely though.
saratdear
Couldn't you just say 'atoms' and hit the nail on the head? Or am I missing something here?
natilovesmike
I would say ... water.

Why not just go with "elementary particles", for the full point? ^_^;
Bluedoll
Carbon Hydrogen and Oxygen = sugar
emma, ginder = spice
and me = everything nice

and Gluons to hold it all together

So I say we are made of glue!

Does the original question mean by mass or by volume? Bikerman was spot on if the question was about volume. But...

chatrack wrote:

yes, if the question referred to mass. Protons & neutrons comprise most of the mass in atoms and quarks are the constituents of these.

I also assume the questioner was talking about tangible structures made of atoms as the reference was to cups, rocks, etc. It should, though, be remembered that most of the mass in the universe is Dark Matter.
