I am currently watching a program which takes a cynical look at conspiracies... Its quite good... and it seems like the theorists seem to be attention seeking and blinkered.
What are your views on such things? Do you believe in world wide conspiracies? I like the idea of this kinda thing... its pure panto!
No, I think people yap too much for there to be even local "secret groups." Surely not global...
How can we really be sure? If they are secret, and assuming the could keep the secret, how would we ever know they existed? Governments are able to keep secrets all the time. Sure we find out about some of the secrets they keep...but by no means all of them.
Sure, I believe some secret groups exist. Not to the extent that I'd become paranoid about them (not yet anyway). Just take a look at some of the terrorist groups out there, we have no clue what they are planning at any given time. We know they exist only because they seek recognition for their acts. If they didn't want the credit for the things they did and just stayed in the background working their terrorist plots...how would we know they were even there??
BTW...what's "panto"?

Agreed. We probably would be horrified if we knew how many secret organizations there are that have a great impact on our lives.
Of course they exist. It's the ultimate for of elitism. Which is something that is inherent in the greediest of individuals and groups. Some have been found out over the years, some have been proven as fakes, some have gone completely under the radar.
Hell, I could form a secret society right now and nobody would ever know about it.
As far as global conspiracies... Those are nothing new. Conspiracies have been part of politics since the dawn of organized politics. Now that we are living in this 'global village' where all nations are familiar with one another, global conspiracies are inevitable. To what extent they go is another question altogether.
Secret society and conspiracy theories have existed at the minimum for centuries.
Of course if they are true it would benefit those involved and in power to mock and minimize anyone who gave these ideas credibility. Point is if what the conspiracy theorist believe is true, well the ones they see as the threat are those in power and telling you how crazy it is to believe these things. I personally believe that what the believers in these things are saying has as much validity as what our government and the news media spoon feed us. G-d forbid our government or the media deceive us.

Good point! Especially when Government successfully convinced everyone that we're heading for a depression, so please sign a Bill for 1.2-trillion dollars to bail out the Banks so that we won't have a depression. Note, it is not 1.2-billion, it is 1.2-trillion!
yea it is remarkable. all the finance guys caused the crisis, made a TON of money from it, and not do they only walk free away from it, they receive government help for their banks to survive so that they can make MORE money?!
I certainly believe that there are companies and individuals who conspire together for their own mutual benefit i.e. several oil companies or supermarkets getting together to fix prices, etc.
However, I don't believe that there is any group so powerful that they can affect global issues on a continual basis.
The problem people with those conspiracys is that when you don't believe it you are somehow part of the conspiracy or it has "brainwashed" you. Sometimes those people cannot be persuaded...

Whether they do it or not, I can't say. If they do it and prosecutors find out (assuming the government isn't also in on it), they're going to be doing some fun time in court. Firms conspiring together on how to set prices is plainly against the law, at least in applying this idea to the US.

The most difficult thing to prove is the unspoken agreements of the big companies.
Like, I donīt hurt you here, you donīt start a price-war there...
But secret societies exist. since dawn of time. mostly they are just too boring for anyone to take interest in, so the restricted attention span of us all tends to fade them out!

Agreed. Initially taxes for example were seen as temporary loans from the people. Now it has become rightful dues. I think taxes are of the most dishonest inventions of Governments to defraud their citizens. Especially when citizens get to be charged for Government services in addition to paying taxes. Yet everyone has become so used to it, it has become completely legitimate. Must be like the daily lies in our lives, that are not regarded as lies, because we have made them true.

A lot of times I do think that prosecutors and other high-up people are either bribed or threatened so that people won't have to do "fun time in court" but instead make tons of money and have "fun times" for real outside of prison instead
