So you actually lived in Russia when it was the USSR?
In one of my classes a girl came in to speak about Israel/Palestine. She was half jewish and half native american, and wanted to connect with her Isreali heritage.
She went to this camp where they united girls from both sides of the conflict who had been stronlgy affected by the war. They would share their stories about why they hated the other side... for example their father was killed and their cousin's baby was killed. they hated the other side so much because of the suffering they had experienced.
But then the girls from the other side would tell an equally heart wrenching or horrifying story. How could they hate someone who had gone through the same thing they had?
So she told us many times they ended up crying in each other's arms - comforting each other.
Later she travelled around the area on both sides of the fence. She stayed with the palestinian and israeli girls she had met at the camp. Now many of them were working to try and create peace - to end the suffering.
This had a very strong effect on me, and I just wanted to share her experience.
