Hello everyone!

Been working on a new papyrus scroll. It is the Jewish Torah.

http://www.turbosquid.com/FullPreview/Index.cfm/ID/466054

Please comment and tell me whether you like it or not. Also any advice is appriciated. Smile

They look great to me, only the ones with the golden top are not really beautiful I think. I would stick with wood textures.
But I wonder why you make the Torah in 3D.
Magicman
This is a pretty good model. The textures aren't perfect but they are very nice. I think it might just be the unrealistic background that throws the textures off, but of course, the background isn't part of the model at all. Good Job.

That's pretty good model.. but it seems a little bit too simple for me. Are you sure you could sell it for $40? Very Happy

The way I see is that the 40$ is an OK price since customers can customize it any way they want it due to the fact that the paper part of the model is a Spline object. Also the shaders are adjustable so if you don't like a certain shader you can make changes to it.

Also the fact that out of that 40$ I get only 15 - 20$ or less...

Thanks for the comments! Great to hear you liked it. I'll try and make another background which will better suit the Torah. Wink

It is very beautiful. The question of the price is not what it is worth, but what artists are able to afford for a single prop. I mean if they are pros wanting to use it for professional animation or something like that I think it will sell good, but I know personally I would have to think about it long and hard before I spent that kind of money on a single prop since I am a hobbyist.

That is a good point. 40$ is a lot of money for a single prop especially if you're an amateur. The thing I've done is that on different 3D sites I sell the model at different prices depending on how much royalty I'll get.

TurboSquid: 50% Royalty - Price: 40$
http://www.turbosquid.com/FullPreview/Index.cfm/ID/466054

Exchange3D: 65% Royalty - Price 37$ (Sale Price: 32$)

3D Nucleus: 70% Royalty - Price 32$

wow it looks really great. I don't know how to do a work like that, so I really adore such pictures.

I know, it's not a useful feedback to you Wink

Great that you liked it. What do you think of the gold, silver and wood materials? Any suggestions on what could be improved?
zbale
Looks great! One factual detail, though: check if you can, but unless I am mistaken, paragraphs are "justified" on Torah scrolls (they aren't indented on one side or another). Apart from that technical detail, very nice!

Sorry, I didn't quite understand... should the text be in the middle or in a different way... can you show me a picture of what you mean. Smile

Thanks for the comments everyone!

I think he means that you need to indent your paragraphs.

Have you ever wrote an essay for an English class or something? Well, if you remember, when you start a new paragraph, you are supposed to indent your paragraphs.

It looks like this: https://people.sunyit.edu/~lhmi/Friends/Emily/Emily_col_essay_1.gif See the small indent in the beginning of each paragraph?

I don't know if they are supposed to be like that on a scroll, I didn't bother to look it up, but that's what he's talking about I believe.

That image was found off Google, I didn't write it.
zbale
Actually, the term 'indentation' may be partly misleading as Torah Scrolls do not seem to follow the kind of standards that we apply when writing essays, etc.

What I mean is that the text runs in columns that have both sides even (i.e. not ragged) apart from the end of some paragraphs (where one verse ends in the middle of the column, coming from the right hand side as it goes from right to left, and the next verse starts right at the beginning of the next line). In other cases one verse ends at the beginning of the line (again, on the right hand side, as it goes from right to left) but the next verse starts at the end of the same line, which visually preserves the column's evenness and leaves a blank in the middle of the line.

Both cases are represented in the pictures found here:
http://www.bbc.co.uk/norfolk/content/images/2007/01/11/torah_scroll_300_300x400.jpg
(look at the right column as there is some kind of reflection covering part of the left one)

and there:

If you want to have a clearer picture (or simply out of personal interest) I suggest you walk into a Jewish bookstore and ask to have a look at either a fac-simile of a Torah scroll (if they have any) or, much easier to find, at a book used by people who prepare the reading of the portion of the week (I believe the technical term for these books is 'tikkun').

Thanks for the information guys! Smile I'll try and see what I can do. The problem is that I don't know Hebrew language and the second thing is that the text isn't in text format but picture since my Photoshop refuses to show the text right... Sad

Does the gold and silver shaders look real or should I still work on them?
zbale
Yep, they look real enough to me (though perhaps a bit too perfectly "clean" ;-D). Some of the light golds and silvers look a bit transparent, which is not hyper realistic but it still looks cool and kind of ethereal; I guess it all depends what's the effect you're after. Great job in any case.

Thanks! Yeah, you're right. They are a bit too clean. Smile My aim is to make as realistic shaders as I possibly can. It just isn't so easy always...

Great to hear you like the model! Smile

Pleasure. Smile Keep going.

very good

Thanks for the comments everyone! I'll try and make some new 3D models when I've got the time. Wink

You should age or try to make the gold look old as well since the paper is brownish and has aged. That should give it a more realistic look.

Thanks! Very Happy That's a very good point; I never thought of that. I'll try make it look more old.

The gold should then probably be more dark?
zbale
I think the reflection of light should be kind of patchier and the gold should be a bit more brown-reddish, though I have no idea how this can be rendered technically (as many painters throughout history have used non-intuitive colors in order to make their paintings more realistic, for instance green in portraits, etc.).

Have a look here for ideas maybe:
