There are a bunch of different icon filetypes, perhaps you want to let us know a little of what you are doing. I know windows XP icons can be created with Gif Movie Gear and photoshop by following this guide: http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms997636.aspx (the middle is the part you need). If you want a favicon for your website, you can use the GIMP (http://www.gimp.org/downloads/) and save the image as a 16x16 file named favicon.ico

That's nice! Do you know of a similar thing for Mac?
I know a nice free icon editor- icofx. It is a freeware. google it and download.
