My new Trail Rig (new pics) It's an International Harvester!

ocalhoun
So, I needed a new rig to go off-roading in after I rolled my jeep off a cliff, and now, finally, I have one!

This lovely specimen of off-road excellence is a 1974 International Harvester Scout II.
Not in perfect shape, but the upgrades make it well worth the $3800 I paid for it.

A partial list of upgrades:
360 cu in Dodge TBI engine
Automatic Transmission
Dana 44 front axle
Dana 60 rear axle
Both differentials welded to be 0 slip
Extra armor plate on front differential, skid plate, and rear corners
36" Super Swamper TSL tires on beadlock rims.
Full roll cage
Custom front and back bumpers
Custom-made rock rails on the side
Wheelbase shortened by 10 inches
Huge lift with lots of flex in the rear
Upgraded gas tank
CD player
Heavy duty, armored steering system

Some more exterior pics for you:

The Scout II is a very unique classic truck, many people have never even heard of them.

The interior is spartan, but not as much as usual for this kind of truck. It has niceties like soft seats, 100% working controls, windshield wipers (with cleaner spray), a heater, and a CD player.

Its roll cage and 5-point harness will give me more safety than the jeep did, so even if the worst happens again, I'll be better off.

The final picture, the Dodge engine that provides plenty of power to keep this beast moving:

Future plans for mods/repairs:
-paint job
-plexiglass for rear windows... and perhaps a windshield too
-replacement of worn-out front leaf springs
-minor electrical work: blinkers and a back-up light that is out

I'll be taking it out on the trails with the off-road clubs twice this weekend, so hopefully I'll come back with action-shots of this thing doing what it does best!

BWAHAHAHA.........that's f%#king great dude .................NOW THAT's a truck Cool

$3800 what a steal for all that gear, hell just the steering, wheels and tires are worth that, not to mention the roll bar and the rest of the truck. Good job ocalhoun, she's all GO and NO SHOW. Your jeep was a much nicer looking, a little show to go with the GO.

Is it 4 wheel disc brakes?

So typical of those trucks the wiring looks pretty rough. Reminds me of my 72 Blazer, had some pretty nice gear on it, 6" lift, Posi (yes they were slip carriers) front and rear, fliped shackles in the rear, raised steering (above the leaf springs, I added the rear discs and fixed the parking brake in the process, just a 4 point roll bar no cage, I added the rock guards. Thing was the wiring was hacked, had problems a few times with things shoorting out on the trail. Got pissed off at it, and having been a jet mechanic in the USMC, and a hot rod builder I had to fix that. I pulled the whole harness and fuse box out from under the dash and laid it out on the bench and fixed all the wires and shorts in it, junk yarded out the dash compnents I needed, and by the time I was cone EVERYTHING inside worked, inside ligts, radio, dash ligts, guages, signals flashers and the rest. Also did the same thing with the engine harness and in the process converted it to internally regulated alternator. Same thing with the tail light and head light harneses, took me a week end and cost me about $200.00 with alternator battery cables and the rest. By the time I was done with it it was one bad ass reliable 4x. Oh I had to replace the gas tank to, got a 37 gallon RV replacement tank for it, which was great for off roading long trails in Colorado.

Like yours it looked like hell, green door brown body, black fender. Bought it for a great price, dumped a bunch of money and time in it, 4 wheeled my but off in the Colorado mountians for 4 years, and sold it for about $200 more than I paid for it.

Looks like a great truck, your gonna have some fun I can tell Laughing

Enjoy yourself, and keep the pics of her in action coming.....oh yeah and BE SAFE!

Also, if you want let's see some up close pics of the underside and the gear built in that MOSHEEN!

Yep, but they're underpowered... I'll be putting in some brake power doubler devices soon, which should make is so you don't have to stand on the brake pedal to stop the thing.

Sorry, even in the new pics I'm about to post, there's no underside pics... I'll get some tomorrow while I'm out on the trail again.

----------------------------------------------Hitting the trail in it!-------------------------------------------------------------------

This thing rocks on the trails! Where other people have trouble and take many attempts and a little damage to get through, I just cruise straight on through on the first try, never with anything worse than just a couple more scratches on the sliders. All these pics were taken in 'easy' parts of the trail, while I waited for others ahead of me to make it past difficult obstacles.

This is the 'Iceman' trail; a 4+ (out of 5) trail that was once a creek bed:

Nowhere near using up all the flex that rear axle has... It can go up and down at least 3-4 feet on either side.

Pic from the top of a 4 foot cliff I'm about to climb in it:

My father used to have an old international harvester B120 truck. That thing was a BEAST. No V-8 could ever compare to its amazing in-line six. Plus it had a 10,000 pound wench on the front.

And from the front:

The tiny, but adequate belly skid:

The beefed-up steering system, and the worn out front springs:

On the camp 5 bypass trail (rated 3, but crosses a 5+ trail frequently, giving opportunities for fun).
Taking the hard way:

Use that flex!

No problem at all, though if the whole trail was like this, I would air down the tires to 10psi or lower so that they would conform to the shape of the rocks:

that thing looks like fun....was thinking of making my dakota look like that.

Better shorten the wheelbase, swap in a solid front axle, and armor it up, for starters...

It is really FAR cheaper to buy an already-modified one than to try to put all these upgrades in yourself.
BigGeek
I totally agree not only is it far cheaper to buy one already done than to put one together yourself, but if you are doing the work yourself, it is a hell of a lot less work.

Man that is one 4 wheelin' sumbeeesh! The rear set up is pretty cool never seen anything like that before. looks like half leafs connected close to the pumpkin, and then the link bars. With those shocks in close to the center that beast gets some major articulation on the rear. Which sure does give it a hell of a rock climbing ability........well it sure looks like it from your pics, and your write up.

10 PSI in the tires, bet those bead locks come in handy with that, you sure wouldn't get away with that without them.

Yeah that always seems to be the problem with big 4x's once you get them built they are under braked. Bigger brakes will help you out a lot.

Sure looks like fun, I bet your pretty happy with that buy, a real rock crawler I must say. Congratulations on a great buy, and having a great time. Thanks for sharing.
