Why you don't translate websites in English??

Hi,

A friend of mine was in Hong Kong for a week.
I knew that in Hong Kong the electronics are cheaper than in Europe so I asked him to buy something: a Tokina lens.
I tried to help him and I looked over a camera store... Man, I didn't find any good website translated in English (some blogs, some referral on some other american blogs but not an official site).
I ask myself why the Chinese guys don't give a damn about that... They are aware that Hong Kong is A MAJOR AREA for commerce and tourism. They know that Chinese is a difficult language and almost nobody (besides the Chinese) know to speak it?
How hard is for them to translate a website?? Many stores could have earned 400-500 euros from my money but they lost it because I didn't understand a word!!

And when I found a translated website, the menus (90% they are jpg pictures) weren't in English. They translated only the content not the menus.
So, no search engine to use, I was like a blind person there. WHY, WHY, WHY!??

Believe me people, YOU LOSE MONEY!!!
There is any Chinese on this forum to give me an answer?

Again about the translation of websites: there is a very good website for subtitles based in Seoul, Korea.
Man, I found very decent subtitles made by them (in English) and I tried to search for another stuff.
So, this guys advertise their subtitles at the end of the sub file. They sign on it and provide the name of their website.
When I try to get there, this website is exclusively in Korean. So, you post English subtitles but your website is in Korean... WHY!!???

I am so lost in this cases and I can't find a decent explanation...
Can somebody help me to understand??

I think that every decent website around the Globe should have been translated in couple of languages:
1. English (UK, USA, half of Canada, NATO official language, EU official language, many parts on India speak English to understand each other);
2. French (France, half of Canada, large parts of Africa, Belgium, Switzerland, etc...),
3. Spanish (this is the most spoken language in the world - all South America is Spanish, Mexicans spoke Spanish, and of course, Spain).

I am not a chinees, but i think that they think that we wont buy anything from there, because of logistics and so on. Why cant we buy our own things here? Therefore i think languages have a low priority

Yes.... but then, are english websites translated to chinese? Maybe some, but not so many

It's because hong kong merchant are not so keen on internet market, most of the companies that have websites only maintain it for their corporate image, not trying to improve sales or for whatever reason, cos' I would say that 90% of Hong kong people haven't even ever pay online or shop online! So, why bother to spend money on maintain a website in both languages? since there are always extra costs when you need to update your website (paying people to translate..etc..). I just think maintain a website in English is necessary if you are trying to make any sale online. But Hong Kong businessmen only keen on offline market....as said, not many people in Hong Kong even know what is Pay pal....so...just my opinion though...

Well, think about it this way. Why don't you translate your website into Spanish, seeing as it's the most spoken language in the world.

It's very ignorant to consider English as the universal language. Although it may seem like that, it certainly isn't. Smile

Not true,taking into account that a lot of people have English as a second language.

our website is in English. we hope it can help english speaking people to communicate and find information in china. we are in canton and very near from hongkong. we can go to hk very often.if you need sth,let us know. please look at www.engford.com

I rarely buy any items made in china unless I really have to. Most of their electronics is a bunch of fake unbranded items.

* You could have used a translator software that converts a whole website.

there are different levels of goods in china,different price of coz. cheap price is easy to get fake items. but it's very funny,most of importers pay very lower price,they cut the price down and down, but resell them in foreign countries with high price as real items.

I am a Chinese and live in main land . I think most of websites in HongKong are Englist because English is a popular language in HongKong .
