Peace be upon you all / Hey,
As a devoted SMF user (i.e. i won't switch to phpbb or other alternatives), i've been waiting for SMF 2.0 for ageeeesss. I just feel that they are taking so long to release each new version of SMF 2.0.
Please do tell me if you agree or if you think that I'm wrong.
I got the impression that SMF 2.0 would be done and released in early 2008, considering their public beta was supposed to be released originally in October 2007, see #1. But the public beta was then pushed to "quite a few months" after August, see #2; They eventually released the public beta in March 2008, so I thought that SMF 2.0 would be finished and released in late 2008. Nope, they instead released another beta in September 2008. This disappointed me. I then thought it might be released in early 2009, maybe mid 2009 just to be safe. Nope, they released a release-candidate version in February 2009. Hmmm, i thought to myself; i'll learn from my mistakes. I now expect the SMF 2.0 version to be finished and released in 2011. Actually that still seems risky; better push that date to 2050. Yes, that seems much safer lol.
I wonder what's taking them so long to make a forum. Afterall, they began developing SMF 2.0 in December 2005. It's now 2009. They could have made an Operating System in that time. Am I being unfair? What do you think?

How does it matter? Your community is made up of people who are using it (as opposed to the software running it).
On a more serious note. If the RC is out, then I figure you should have the final release by the end of the year. Maybe some of the developers went off to get married. Life is calling after all...
yeah smf2 is taking far too long. I bet they are making some nice things, but they have to be really good to get back users from phpBB, which is 3 for a while now and most people think that means more stable.

I want those new features. I guess i'm bored with smf 1.1, which i've had for ages.

They're adding some features, which i personally thought should have been standard ages ago. SMF 2 will catch up to phpbb 3 i think.
Well, at least it's not Duke Nukem Forever or Hurd.
SMF's developers' blog released a new post (http://blogs.simplemachines.org/dev/310301/As+%26quot%3BCurve%26quot%3B+progresses.html).
Reading inbetween the lines of this post, SMF 2.0 is still far off in the future. *sigh*
Well ... vurrent version is ok, it's working realy nice (IMO better than phpBB) then there is no such big deal to wait longer for v2 ...
Well version 2.0 is good converting forums which use the current version is a pain in a**. So im not much bothering about it since the current version has no problems. Also I wish if they could convert all current version forums with series of updates to the comming version 2.0
Hey,
A developed posted on the SMF developers' blog (http://blogs.simplemachines.org/dev/321718/SMF+Dev+Blog+%2342%3A+The+Blog+About+Life%2C+The+Universe+And+Everything.html). I of course looked for timings and dates. As usual none were given, which is the (in)famous SMF policy.
The post starts off with "The last blog post regarding SMF's development was posted about half a month ago." That was posted on July 02. The last blog post was on May 13. That's not half a month ago. That's one and a half months ago. A typo or a revelation of how time passes for the SMF team lol
?
There was a very interesting diagram given, which illustrates their efforts with regards to bugs:
It seems they go through periods of near-zero activity, and then they suddenly get to work for two months. In 2007, the main two periods of work were feburary 2007 and august 2007 with the rest of the months being below 50 bugs resolved in other months. In 2008, feburary 2008 and august 2008 are again the main periods of work, although work in the other months has increased to above 50 bugs resolved per month. In 2009, the pattern dies off, and work steadily increases from december 2008 to march 2009, then afterwards drops and rises (too early to identify the pattern).
In other words, the bugs in 2007 and 2008 were resolved mainly in feburary and august, which is only 2 of the 12 months. In 2009, the developers have done more work relatively-speaking.
The developer then finishes by saying "I know most of you are eager to know when RC2 will be released. Unfortunately, I cannot say. Personally however, I am counting on a release this summer." So RC2 is going to be released in summer? If June and July aren't summer, when is summer? I count the latter half of august as the beginning of autumn. So unless RC2 is going to be released within 46 days (doubtful. it took them two months to release a security update for RC1), then RC2 is going to be released in autumn. Probably september. There will probably need to be another security update which will take another two months, so the RC2 security update will be released in november. Then they will need a few months to release the final version (assuming they don't torment us further with releasing a possible RC3), so the final version will probably be released in may 2010.
Remembering that they started developing SMF 2 in 2005 (see first post in the topic), then it's taken them five years to upgrade a forum from version 1 to 2. And it'll have taken them 3 years of releases (later half of 2007, 2008, 2009, first half of 2010).
Also, i still don't get how the developer doesn't know when RC2 is going to be released. He's part of a team working on the bug squashing/new features...how can he not know?
I liked phpbb2 but creating forums in phpbb3 is hard, so I tried SMF 1.1.8. out (there wasn't a 1.1.9. yet) and I liked it.
But what I can't seem to find out, is what will be the major differences between SMF v1 and v2? (I didn't found anything on the Announcementforum :/ )

Peace.
The difference between SMF version 1 and the new coming soon (or coming later) version 2 is the implentation of many new features.
Here are some
| Quote: |
* Database abstraction - with support for PostgreSQL and SQLite planned alongside that of MySQL.
* Automatic installation of packages into themes other than just the default.
* Email templates to simplify customization of forum emails.
* Moderation center including post, topic and attachment moderation - to allow approving of user content before it is made public.
* User warning system.
* Additional group functionally including group moderators and requestable/free assignable groups.
* WYSIWYG editor to provide an intuitive user interface to those users not familiar with BBC.
* Permission improvements such as group inheritance and permission profiles to further reduce the complexity of the permissions system.
* File based caching for a performance increase on all forums regardless of whether an accelerator is installed.
* Mail queuing system to stagger the sending of emails to improve performance on large forums.
* Advanced signature settings to allow the administrator of a forum to more tightly control the contents of users signatures.
* Personal messaging improvements including ability to automatically sort incoming messages and a variety of display options.
* Improved upgrade script with better timeout protection and simpler user interface.
* Custom profile fields to enable administrators to add additional member fields from the administration center. |

Peace.
Thanks loyal
It's really good that SMF is getting an User warning system and advanced permission-setting (without making it more complicated
).

I like all new implantation of SMF 2. Practical and very useful most of those. But I really don't mind if they are taking time to get this new version perfect before launch its better than having a version full of bugs.
News!
SMF have released the second RC of version 2.0!
I found some humerous wording in the SMF official news:

What do they mean by "immediate release"? RC1 was released in Februrary. It's October now. That's 8 months, right? If they mean they released it as soon as it was finished, then that was obvious lol.

A few? More like 8. Almost enough for a baby
So when should the finished version be released? SMF's policy is to make a few vague references on when 2.0 will be finished; this time the only information I could find on when 2.0 will be finished, was "[this second RC] is one of the last steps towards 2.0 going gold".
I think we can't be too far off. Possibly a third RC, and then a final version (or if we're fortunate straight from from second RC to final release). Considering it took five months from beta to RC and eight months from RC1 to RC2, if they plan to make another RC, then i predict an RC3 being released in mid-spring 2010, with a final release in autumn 2010. If they skip RC3, then hopefully SMF 2.0 will be finished by early summer 2010.
Peace.
I myself have been waiting for SMF2.0 for AGES..
It was back in 2007 when I was running a small forum with SMF 1.3.
I was actually planning on buying a IPB licence but decided to stick with the free alternatives.
And during that time, SMF was way easier to manage and mod than phpBB, so I chose to work with SMF1.3.
After running my forum for a while, I began to add more features or "mods" on to my SMF forum, but at that state it was pretty difficult to integrate the new mods with my custom theme.
So I have been waiting for SMF2 since then because one of its features was suppose to be better integration between mods and themes.
It has been almost 2 years now, and my forum has long closed, but I am planning on relaunching my forum once the final version of the SMF2 hits public
aaaaany time now

i chose smf over phpbb cos phpbb had a bad security reputation at that time.
