Use GPL softwares
always try OPEN SOURCE solutions before buying anything
charge HIGH PRICES for your services... because people charging low values are the ones that ruin our biz (also that people who do lame work are even worse)
Get you hands on as much books as possible... read read read.... you want to know your code so you can have the skills to hand code sites... do always be depended on wysiwyg programs. you want to be able to open a text editor and write code by hand... this is a great skill to have..
as for layouts and designs.... work with photoshop and adobe illustrator.. these are essential tools in the
bizz..
Gimp is also very good and is open source.
I have started a collection of graphic design books , typography books and anything that i can get inspired from.
you want to have a solid background as well so if your real about it... go to school!!

Checkout other websites and learn from them!
Learn scripting language, even though you could get around it with programs like Dreamweaver.

Well I wouldn't say that, are you a BAD designer/developer if you make FREE Templates? Some people just make them for fun (like me, I don't earn a penny with designing templates). You also have people who make FREE and PREMIUM templates, are they bad too, I guess not....

First you should master some web design basics. Learn XHTML, CSS, Javascript and PHP the choose Photoshop as your graphic editor. It will take you only 3 - 6 months to master such stuff. Try to read online tutorials and don't panic if you fail two or three times. Failure is not disaster but its a phenomenon for your success. And remember, most web developers/designers including me, are self thought.
Then start understanding some open sources. Start with WordPress and jQuery. They are the most documented, most supported and most helpful projects I know so far. Also try Joomla, then Mootools.
Next, start creating something and release them for free either with Creative Commons (CC) or GNU/GPL. This will give you a pre-training for your future paid projects. Try creating some challenging stuff. This will unlock your creativity bit by bit.
Create your own website, write some tutorials, have a portfolio.
Finally, you'll discover you are getting noticed. Create some paid things now. Sell with cheap price. But not cheapest.
Start some services, now.
Don't panic though. Try and try, you'll get your best.
Then help others. Tell people how you became successful.

I'm surprised nobody has mentioned http://www.w3schools.com/ yet.
It's probably one of the best websites out there to learn programming. I know it helped me a lot.
Good luck!

those are TEMPLATES... you will not develop them for a specific client... people will not have the design as EXCLUSIVE... that is why templates can be free and not ruin the biz... also when you design the templates people will generally have a link to your site... which MIGHT lead some future costumers to your site...

If you are a newbie, i thinhs you should learn HTML code. it is a basic language code.
may you can find it over google by key search: html
If you to build a professonal website. you should learn other code for Example: PHP, Java, aspx..
there are some softwares, thay may help you to build a new website:
for Example: dreamwave...

How is w3school turning people in html geeks? It is just another website to get tips and tricks about learning programming languages.
They have multiple other languages with tutorials on them.
As far as I know, w3school has the most detailed tutorials on the internet. Not to mention they have a huge database of all sorts of tutorials. You can learn just about anything there.
Have you ever even been there?

HTML is the Basis, if you don't know HTML there is no point in learning PHP...
Yes, if we don't learn HTML language first, we will not be able to learn PHP language

Yes that is right. You can learn all of the scripting languages before learning HTML.
Because HTML is just a design language. But others are playing on the background.Gives Texts to the foreground.
you can do everything with scripting languages excep Design. It is like you have a paper, brush and a brain to imagine what you want to paint. This is scripting.
And if you have colors. You can paint. Everything without a background.
And if you have all of them. You will be the WebDesigner.
