are you talking about java applets or java sever pages (.jsp) ?

There is a website which I open and out comes a java virtual machine. And my teacher said that php is used by the medium sized companies but java are used by the large companies. So, that is why I was wondering what are some websites that use it.

we have a lot of java based sites at work and when the VM isn't started it takes for ever to load the page.
Java has it's pro's and con's, I suggest you look at those and make a disicion

Google doesn't use Java.
Most high traffic websites use PHP (for companies who know what they're doing) or ASP (for those who do not).

There are also softwares which you could use on your computer which act just like apache, wamp or even xampp. The only difference is just that instead of it supporting php files it supports jsp files. According to what I've seen on the net, Tomcat is the best produced by apache. But the one which I use is Blazix. It can be downloaded from this link http://www.blazix.com/Blazix12.exe . But before you install it make sure that you dont have anyother webserver installed on the computer.
