Detecting Nerve Signals

ninjakannon
I am interested to know whether there is a relatively successful non-intrusive method of detecting signals from the nerves and what the limits are of this. I'm especially interested in detecting signals from motor nerves.

We have sensory nerves and motor nerves, I would be surprised if we could distinguish between them with a non-intrusive method, can we? I would assume that the sensory nerves and motor nerves are sending signals in different directions, but this may not help.

Is there a limit to the thickness of skin/tissue or distance between the detector and the nerve when detecting the signals?

I heard that the Japanese had invented a robotic suit or arm that detected nerve signals and then acted as an aid to strength (although it reacted too quickly, as it received the signal before the muscles reacted!).
