Dreamweaver substitute?

jinger89
Can anyone suggest me an alternative to Dreamweaver? Preferably one that is free, or at least cheaper than Dreamweaver.

Thanks!

Kompozer http://www.kompozer.net/ - free and open source
Openoffice.org http://www.openoffice.org/ - free and open source, similar to Microsoft Office (its MS Word counterpart can export to HTML)
Amaya http://www.w3.org/Amaya/ - also free and open source

I myself seldom use those authoring tools anymore - ordinary text editors are good enough for me Smile

I definitely prefer basic text editors as well, but sometimes I just need something to help me visualize the jumble of code I'm laying down.

Thanks for the suggestions!

I was used to Dreamweaver for years. When I came to work, and when they gave me plain text editor to create a complete template for a website, I thought I would die... Confused Anyway, editors like Notepad++ should be enough but there is a lot of free that give you more for this...
For example PageBreeze (http://www.pagebreeze.com/). It is free and WYSIWYG editor. It is powered by Microsoft Internet Explorer. Color-coded HTML source (tag) editor, preview mode, included webpage templates...
There is one more graphical editor, but not sure how good it is since I never tried it. Dynamic HTML Editor (http://www.hexagora.com/en_home.asp).

Trellian WebPage. Just found it yesterday. Sounds good, but it doesn't fit my needs: to modify css template.

There are a few you could use.

The old nVu (not sure if it's still going now) is one option.

Amaya from the W3C is another.

Microsoft's Visual Web Developer Express is another free one.

HTMLKit is a very popular one and has tons of addons and modules you can add to it.

Personally I prefer to code with text editotrs and use Notepad++

I believe that Kompozer is good, however not perfect. Once you've used Dreamweaver and professional software, those that come free will be very limited. Personally I'm trying to get hold of Microsoft Expression Web 2. It probably would be a step-down from Dreamweaver, but from I hear Microsoft Expression Web 2 is aiming to compete with Dreamweaver and a complete departure from FrontPage. If you have Microsoft Software you may qualify for an upgrade of 99US. They have trial packages available for trying out.

I have used Dreamweaver for years now so I'm soo badly used to it. I use Dreamweaver 8 and it let me do all my html work as well as php stuff. I haven't found anything which can complete with Dreamweaver yet. Anyway I'm going to check KompoZer.

kompozer is equally good as dreamweaver. You can also use Amaya, a free and open source software to do just that.

I used to use this editor a long time ago...

If I am not wrong there is a free version of Top Style called Top Style Lite available on this site: http://topstyle.en.softonic.com/

and you can always try http://www.oldversion.com to get older version of the softwares...
