How to become a millionaire on the internet? - This might sound like a weird question to some of you, but it's really possible to make huge sums of money in here. Just look at success stories like Goog£e and ¥ahoo. Of course those may sound as far-from-my-bed-shows, in fact they are; you definately need a lot of knowledge and experience to create one of those success stories.
So, is becoming a millionaire impossible for Joe Average? Of course not! The internet is like a jungle full of hidden treasures. But instead of finding them, you need to create them out of a good idea. Leave the big ones (impossible for Joe Average) for the big boys and grab whatever you can. Heck, a million $ isn't that much, isn't it? 
Ok, so you still don't believe me? I'll give you a good example:
Get a good and catchy domain name like "The Million Dollar Homepage".
Divide your website into a million pixels in small blocks of 10x10.
Sell those blocks for a dollar per pixel. 10,000 blocks for 100$ each = 1 Million$!
Crazy idea? Maybe. Maybe not. At least it's worth a try. Oh, wait, I'm already too late. 
It already exists, like you might have guessed. 
The Million Dollar Homepage is made by Average Joe (Alex Tew), a 21-year old univirsity student (no not me 
) from England wanting to pay for his university studies. The website has been up since 26 august, but only became popular the last few days. It is already listed in Dmoz.
Real? Clever idea? Genius? - Most likely a big yes. He already sold 46,500 pixels, worth the same amount in dollars on a few days. Heck, even I was tempted to buy a block.
So the answer is: yes people, becoming a millionaire on the internet is really possible!
And now it's up to you, dear Frihosters. Think! Let your brain work! And come up with great ideas on how to become a millionaire on the internet. Let your imagination work and don't be too 
to post them here! We will keep them quiet.

* Get a cool and attractive domain name
* Attract more and more members
* Sign up for the best affiliate programs and get more and more clicks per day.
* Sell some cool stuff that people love to spend for and buy like templates and banners and avatars.
* Make your site user-friendly.

I posted my initial response before reading other responses. Let me say this. The idea of making millions on the web is good. The idea of doing it with a simple idea is practically ludicrous. While you may have a few boned head ideas making some money in the fashion of the pixel seller, your time & money is more fruitfully spent on your state lottery. Not only are your odds better, you save time & help a good cause in your state of residence. What many posters here appear to have in common, is a desire for money, too much free time, internet access, & little to no brain cell activity.

when i got into website industry I started off using Yahoo! Geocitites, I knew nothing about anything and just started writing shit down on a page. I switched to tripod for the longest time tried promoting it and all I got was some of the rudest comments about the site ever. I had a website in raw html on www.freewebs.com for a while and started to wonder about a real server and stuff. i found out about this service and went for it. Not one time did I think about earning 1 penny by making a website. All my goal was, was to get the website popular, and have some traffic going through there like other BIG websites. I may have not ful-filled my dream 100% yet, but im satisfied with my almost 1000 unique visitors this month, with around 50 unique hits from, google, msn, etc. Yes to you big shots that get thousands of unique visitors daily that is like you going out of business, but I remember when I was nothing but a tripod member and got so happy when my site meter hit 100 hits and that was probably 3/4's of me doing the web page. So money never really crossed my mind when I make websites...my goal in them is just to get them out to the world and get some traffic in there. Geocities, another example of such a success story. They were sold for 3 billion$ in 1999 to Yahoo.
My point is that when
You have a great idea.
You also have a lot of luck.
You put a lot of work in it.
Everything is still possible on the internet. A lot of big websites could be made by you and me. Websites that are earning a lot of money.
Look at this website: http://www.world-of-nintendo.com/nintendo/web_page_history.shtml . The webmaster is a member of a forum I frequent quite regularly. He made and is making a lot of money with this and other websites. He might have a lot of knowledge now, but he didn't have that when he started building websites. Such websites aren't hard to code, while they are usefull and able to earn a lot.
I posted this message because there are a lot of very talented people in here. I wanted to show them that with a great idea and with a lot of creativity you can really do a lot of things on the internet. You can earn a lot while you have nothing to lose. (you are hosted for free ) If you have a good idea, do something with it and use it. Even if it turns out to be nothing, you will still have learned a lot!
I would certainly be proud if I would be able to say that I hosted the future Yahoo/Google for free.

Bondings can I ask you a personal question? It's cool if you don't answer it, but here it is. Do you make any money at all by all of these ads on Frihost? I know it goes to paying for Frihost, but if you make more than your amount that you pay for Frihost (most likely never get that much money off of google ads) do you get to pocket any of that money? What I'm trying to ask is do you make any money off of Frihost?
Sometimes, clicks on Google ads are worth a lot of money. It just depends on the context of the web page you're viewing them in.
Especially on this topic (topics on money, etc). All the Google ads that appear when you go to this topic are the 'MAKE MONEY ONLINE!!' and 'Earn $5000' type ads, which sometimes pay up to US$2 per click! As I write this, the Google ads at the top are:

I strongly disagree with this. There are a lot of people and even companies that are making their money from affiliates and adsense. Heck, 90% of all revenue of Google is made through adsense.

I think you answered your own question there. See, to think of the most insane idea ever you would have to BE the most insane ever, and I just don't think you are!I don't know if someone posted this already but here it is. This would actually help Google more than you but if you could pay some money to have Google put a text link to your site on their home page for like an hour, Google would have enough money to probably buy out Microsoft. And it would probably send thousands of people to your site. So if you were selling something, you might be able to make money out of it too.

This story is mostly copied from the nintendo site.. Why not come up with something usefull?
When someone got a brilliant idea, make sure you have the rights and patents before telling anyone. I had a great idea almost 2 years ago, i spend 6 months of research and working out my plan, just to find out when i when to a patent office, that a japanese factory asked for a patent for the same thing just 2 months before i did.. 
So i don't trust internet less then before, cuz it's like this ( i think)
When you google for something, you'll find lots of pages. But if you look for something that doesn't exist, google might do something with it..
Like, hé someone was looking for this subject today, nothing found.. and then call someone who has the money or resourses to build and make it.
I don't know how they found out my plan, but i don't believe in coincidence..
But maybe it's a good idea to buy good domainnames. Next year we will have .eu names and there are a lot of them still available.
Find a good one and you never know what happens..I saw the news about The Million Dollar Page in the technology section of the BBC. I guess that it’s one of those stories that if told most people would say “Bullocks, that’s impossible, it’s just another scam, another gimmick”. But not, it seems that this is the one exception that confirms the rule. Good the guy.
One thing that strikes me though is that the copy on The Million Dollar Page is extremely well written, a thumbs ups if it is really the work of a 21 year-old.
The image y merchadinsing is everything, if you know how to promote yoyr site and make this very esay for any kind of user, sudenly you will have money.
There is no reason for it but it really does make you feel like buying up a lot of squares. You wouldn't think that there would be anyone who would buy any squares from you but it's free to start up so nothing but good can come from it. I would be delighted if I could get any money out of a site I made, It would be neat, and I would just give it all back to the site, find a real good host and get a really good layout and all of that. Am I crazy for wanting to buy those squares

After Looking For A while , I have came Across A Huge List Of similar websites that have sprouted after the Instant Hit Of this unique idea.
I know that there has been both appriciations and rejection of the wonder boys ideas but believe me it has just started a whole new advertising concept.
Here are the recent additions of the sites along with the discription:
Million Penny Homepage: The first of the copycat websites to hit the mainstream. Charging only 1/100th of Million Dollar for ad space and therefore growing very rapidly in an attempt to raise $10,000 for the owner. Lots of traffic and just over 50% full at last check.
Pixel Bay: Keep your eyes on this one. It's run by a HUGE publicly held Online Marketing company with huge resources (meaning contacts and capital) to drive traffic to your pixel ads. Pixel Bay sells 10x10 blocks for $100 and has cleared $20,000 in its first few days online. If you look at the traffic MDHP had in it's first week and compare it to the traffic Pixel Bay received in just the first few days you'll see why you need to keep this one on your radar. I wouldn't be at all surprised to see these guys zoom right past MDHP in their first month online. Success in the Pixel Ad arena has to do with raw traffic pushing ability and Pixel Bay has an enourmous amount of just that.
Pixels By The Dozen: Wowza, technically speaking this is one of the best pixel pages I've seen. For every pixel ad you post there is a mouseover feature that pops up a 144 x 144 of your company logo (or whatever picture you want diplayed). I can see this feature being very valuable to advertisers since now the surfer will see more than just a tiny "micro" ad, they'll see a "full size" banner ad popup. PBTD is selling pixel space at $72 minimun order (144 pixels) and your URL will also be rotated through a Featured Listings section on the homepage. Oh, and 10% of all profits are going to help with the hurricane relief fund.
100k/ 250k/ 500k Homepages: Wow, the pages are excellent. Great design and whoever is writing the blog is hilarious. I wonder who owns these 3 homepages? Oh yeah, we do. Yes Merlin and Harris have joined the pixel fray. Hey, we figured if we're going to spend all this time reviewing pixel sites we might as well have a few of our own too. So, hop on your mouse and click on over to those links above and buy yourself some pixels. Trust me when I tell you that we get A LOT of traffic - just read our blog...wink wink
Sex Million Dollar Hompage: No further discussion needed here. It's an 18 and up pixel homepage with porn site banners all over the page. It had to happen, sex sells I suppose - to the wrong people.
Pixel Profits: Yet another ingenious twist on Alex Tew's original idea. Pixel Pr0fits sells pixels for $1 each ($100 for a 10x10 square), but here's the twist. Once you place your image ad up the next person who purchases pixel property from the site will first have to click on any one of the existing ads during the purchase process. That click chooses that ad's owner to share in 50% of the monies paid to buy the pixel space. So, not only do you get to place your ad and get traffic, but you also have the potential to make back more than your original investment in time from the 50% commisions. Only 1400 blocks are available for sale
Adalot: Ok, as pixel page creativity goes Adalot is a pack leader. Here you don't get to place a simple 2-D pixel ad, but a 3-D structure that represents your site. What's the purpose? The owner wants to build his own little SIM city online with streets, trees, cars, people, and buildings. Each building is an ad - kudos to Adalot. $100 per block and you have to buy every block your building touches.
Million Dollar Dungeon: It had to happen I suppose. The first "anything goes" pixel homepage. I won't reproduce what this guy allows on his site, there might be kids reading this. An as yet empty page selling pixel space for $1 per 10x10 block
Million Blinken Lights: A pixel site with a sense of humour. Blinken lights is a parody of the pixel industry and is written with a crazy German accent. Also, all the ads are animated .gif images so once this page fills up it'll be a cacaphony of little dancing ads. One penny per pixel or $1 per block/
One Million Pixels: A very simple $0.05 a pixel ($5 per 10x10 block) page with a unique feature. When your pixel ad is moused over a full size banner for your site pops up in the upper right corner of the homepage. Not much else to say about this one at the time of review - check back later.
Your Own Dream Car: And yet another unique spin upon the original concept. You not only get to buy pixel ads for $45 a block but you also get to enter to win a Ferrari, one entry per block. The contest is a intresting twist. Although, I see it more as a way for the owner to make more money rather than the advertisers to get more traffic to their sites.
250,000 dot ORG: A few things about this site. One, he's selling lotsa pixels meaning losta traffic. Two, when I first found this page he offered a $25,000 prize to the winner of his contest (ok, good idea). But, I take a peek a few days later and he's dropped the purse to $2,500, c'mon now - if you're going to offer a prize you can't reduce the purse in the middle of the race. That just ain't cool. And finally, I open up the page today and who do I hear screaming out of my speakers? Bon Jovi!?!?! You're killing me with the Bon Jovi here and at least have the courtesy of putting a mute button on the page so we don't all have to suffer your bad taste in music, pleeease.
Million Quarter Homepage: And once again we have a total ripoff of Alex Tew, but hey at least he admits it and says he's just doing the same thing at a quarter the price. Looks like someone is buying pixels here though, so it must be getting some traffic.
eBay Pixels: Brilliant!! The only ads you'll on this page link directly to an eBay auction, well most of them at least. This guy's in the UK and sells his pixel blocks for 10p each (not sure what that means in cents), but still a novel idea.
Road to A Million: Ok now, I just don't get some people. MDHP was built to pay for college tuition and these folks come out and say they need $1,000,000 to keep mom home with the kids. The pixel revolution must be protected!! People can't just throw a site up to beg for money with - jeez.
101 Billboard: A good concept, but a boring site. A billboard shaped pixel area with 400k blocks available at $100 per block. I've been watching this one for a little while and see no action happening here
Ad Graffiti: Here's a guy who's thinking on his toes. His pixel ad site is segmented into categories and you get to choose which category/page your ad gets placed on. Selling for $0.50 a block. Also has a realy cool mouse over text popup that gives a 200 word description of your site, product, or service. Owner's a really cool guy.
Buy Brian A Beer: Here's a unique twist - "Brian" is a normal guy who wants you to buy him a beer. How you may ask?....well each pixel block costs $1 and a beer costs about $1 (the cheap domestic stuff at least), so buy a block and brian gets to buy a beer. Crazy concept eh? Lotsa wierd stuff on this one. Dug a little deeper into "Brian's" apparent plight and it seems an upstart marketing company is running this site in hopes of getting their name out in the world, and buying their friend Brian a lot of beer - good luck to you.

The million dollar page is a rather useless page but hey? You get paid and thats all that matters . Good on the guy who thought about the idea. Thats actually a brilliant idea, because its so simple yet effective. If only i could think of something so smart one day.. Heck i could make a new organization and become the next millionaire if i get lucky

This prize, instead of being for space travel, will be for time travel. The site will offer $1,000,000 to the first person to successfully travel back in time and, um, back.
When someone finally wins the prize, take the time machine to before the internet boom, and using all you know now, make $1,000,000 on the internet. Start eBay, or eToys, or Amazon or something.

Wow, it's been almost a month since this thread was started (and I first saw that guy's "Million Dollar Homepage") and now the page is much more populated with stuff.
Someone even made an imitation, "20 cent pixels", and if you buy 9 blocks there you get a free 100px link on the Million Dollar Homepage.
it's a get rich quick thing why would anyone pay for those pixels? why would anyone go visit that page, except for a moment because of threads like this? is he actually getting clickthroughs?

Next , since people will wonder how you are making these really cool websites, flash games, and designs. This is where the money rakes in. Create some tutorials for languages of all kind. If they want to go more in depth, charge them a little bit for em. Then, once they've made a website, offer them to host it for a small fee per month on your server. You can also make little money buy creating and selling ads for big name companies like Alienware, BestBuy, and even Dell. If anyone would like to add on to this, you are welcome to harvest my ideas ! make a good site not one just to mke money s my feeling. You may or may ntoe make money ot f it but you will at least have a great site.

The initial boom of the .com was quite a bubble which didnt take long to burst but now I feel like its coming back, the web is making a comeback this time its much stronger and not like the initial bubble which will burst anytime soon, and I think we all should be getting a piece of the pie. The reluctant boomers are becoming computer savvy and are trying really hard to look techie by purchasing all the new gadgetery that comes out. THERES LOTS OF MONEY TO BE MADE!!!!.
hmmm.. wonder if it would work.. A good way to earn money off the internet is by buying a dedicated server for around $2,000 then renting game servers to popular games like Battlefield 2 or Counter-strike. Then put up a site selling servers and put google ads on there. Make sure you tell all your friends to click them once a day and encourage visitors to your site to click them. You'll make the $2000 back in no time, especially if you are renting out battlefield 2 servers because they go for almost 300 dollars a month for a 64 player! Google ads will be a nice addition to the money you're cranking in from the servers. Once you make a hefty profit you can upgrade your dedicated server and get really popular. Make sure you actually buy the dedicated server instead of just renting it out every month. Renting one makes your profit go to almost zero.

This guy is pretty clever. I am not fascinated with his earnings; I am fascinated with his idea and realization. If you are looking around you will find out many good sites, nice sites, useful sites, but without visitors. Why? They have potentials but without fulfillment. Two factors are very important: idea and money. What is more important? For me, this is idea, because people always looking for something new. Just copy of BIG BROTHER or BIG SISTER is not idea. Of course, if you invest money, you can start with copy, and in future maybe come some good results in $$$$. OK, go back on idea. Every idea needs power of faith, and without faith you cannot say: "I have good idea". With faith in your idea you will insert all your effort in realization of it. That is simple secret of millioniers.
Second factor, money, is also very important. Internet world is world of advertising. If you put any combination of words on Yahoo/Google you will get in return few millions results. Who will find your clever idea on page 9795? Here is coming in game advertising. It is not necessary to invest lot of money, it is much important to spread your idea with quality words and advertising tactics. Huh he sold out 504800 pixels man. Why dont we didnt get this idea before he do it . I've seen a few websites that make appeal to human emotion. Quite a few websites have popped up lately featuring a rabbit held captive. If the captor doesn't get what he wants, he eats it (rabbit is awesome!).
