The Indian Premier League (IPL) on Tuesday named South Africa as the host of the six-week tournament, beginning next month. The decision followed talks held in Johannesburg between Cricket South Africa's chief executive Gerald Majola and IPL commissioner Lalit Modi, who had been expected to visit England on Wednesday to evaluate the possibility of staging the event there.

Although no official announcement has been made yet, sources said that the tournament will be held between April 18 and May 24, a delay of about one week from the original schedule.

Eight venues have been identified for staging the eight-team tournament and the matches will start at 4 pm IST and 8 pm IST to make it convenient for Indian television viewers.

Modi and Majola are scheduled to hold a press conference at 8.30 pm IST ((3 pm GMT)) where the details of the tournament are expected to be announced.

South Africa pipped England as the venue after the BCCI decided to shift the tournament outside India because of security issues in view of the general elections.

The tournament will feature 59 matches. It is understood that concerns over weather, logistics and the costs involved persuaded IPL executives to choose South Africa ahead of England.

Think you need to put your news articles in quotes? Shocked Smile Thanks for the news though.

Interesting to read about the announcement. Can imagine South Africans must be very excited, and the way we know them being geniuses with marketing they must already be well on the way with making detailed arrangements. Smile

This will be a good test of South Africas security, what with the football world cup being held there the following year.

Good point. Last time I was there in November last year there was a marked improvement in security at the airport. They were even checking the transportation, i.e. whether the taxi drivers are bona fide. Only real negative I find is that South Africa is expensive in terms of transportation, accommodation and meals. Even with a currency that is much lower, they more than compensate with much higher prices everywhere.

Yes man, specially in Johannesberg, I saw that there were very few taxis available for personal hiring. The taxi there is a 16 seater bus and goes to different locations but you cannot hire a car taxi to go to a specific place or atleast I could not find one.

Many taxis are private ones who do private deals with people. You get to know them by word of mouth. I picked up a good one through the Gardencourt Hotel in Eastgate.
