The above two quotes are from another thread, now my original comment wasn't racist in any way,but from the reply,it was perceived as a racist comment. (correct me if i am wrong tingkagol) .

Is race such a sensitive issue now that you can't use a foreign sounding word for comic effect?

Very whong. haha.

I never thought your comment (or mine) were in any way racist.

And as for the question, I think you're being sensitive. People that point at anything that barely even resembles racism is overreacting. But I don't know, maybe you come from a country that's sensitive in the uses of the word "white" other than the color, or maybe you thought I was being an a**hole. But just to clear it up, I wasn't being one. And I'm sorry if you felt I accused you for being racist. I was just having a little fun just like you. Smile

Let not race be a sensitive issue.

Here in Sweden a lot of old neutral race associete words are practical forbidden. It has escalated so much, if you have a dark skinned neighbour and you want to say it you hesitate how to explain it and "not white skin" is what you dare to say. Smile

My dad said that in his reading books in school there was no exclusion is race words - that was 50 years ago - today it is almost printed "not white" in the books.

I am not having "a dogs head" for beeing whiter than white (If I ever walk in the sun I just get burned skin, not a tan I get red - so I always keep in the shade) - no other should ever have a dogs head for having what ever color they have!

Now that is just sad. I never knew people were that sensitive out there. I'm interested to know how that came to be.

Personally, I think it's stupid and overly presumptuous.

Come off it! Racism is a fact of life. It is with us. It is ugly, it needs to be dealt with, not hidden under rules and regulations and then after the rules and regulations say: we have no racism as we have rules and regulations that say there will be no racism.

In another thread we heard a story of a black couple who needed to rent accommodation, and after special effort found something. The rental agency phoned the wife of the couple and told her they got accepted, and could they come in to sign the lease. When they got there, the rental representative apparently started to hesitate and stutter and then all of a sudden advised them that the apartment was no longer available. This is a fact of life. So instead of confronting this issue there and then, the couple went back home and became unhappy about it, telling their friends this sad story. Stories like these happen every day, worse stories like these happen every day, we need to take note of them, deal with them as best we can. We do not have to have a revolution about them, but we need to address these stories. I think we have come a far way with racism, but it is still there, in all its ugly detail.

So having said this I am happy about this discussion. It is good for people to say when they are sensitive instead of pretending they are not. In the example that I gave the people could easily have been mistaken as there could have been another reason that they got declined, or not, they will never know as they did not speak up when they should have. They pretended it was OK when it obviously was not.

Sorry my mistake, unfortunately race is a sensitive issue,it was a big debating point in the UK a couple of years back, through the big brother tv programme. Firstly in the celebrity version, when 3 of the UK house mates (Jade Goody,Danielle Lloyd and Jo O'Meara) made comments to a Indian house mate (Shilpa Shetty) that were deemed by some to be racist.

Read here about what was said and by whom.

Jade Goody the ringleader took most of the flack when she left the house, and Jo O'Meara's career never recovered after it,the only one who came out of it well and its often been said that her comments were arguably the most potentially racist of the lot,was Daneille Lloyd, but then she was a model, who was happy to get her kit off for the red tops.

Again in big brother (not the celebrity version) about 6 months later,a house mate called Emily Parr used the word "ni**er" ,she said ..

Youtube video

Channel 4 who had loads of complaints over the celebrity version this time acted straight away and removed her from the house, but they still got complaints as a lot of people thought they did so only because of the backlash to the celebrity version.

Emily complained after she was removed that Charley (the black house mate) used the word many times in the house, and that she only used the word in the same context that Charley did.

Obviously it opens up the who can say the word and who can't debate.

Were channel 4 right to remove her? or were they using her as a scapegoat?
was it a racist comment? Or was it a naive comment?

My view was that Emily was naive and was used as a scapegoat, channel 4 bottled it,they should of kept her in the house and used what she said to open up and discuss the grey areas of what is and what isn't racist.

So in answer to your question, race is a sensitive issue in this country.
tingkagol
Glad to know. I come from a country where racism is almost non-existent, and I'm sorry for being so naive in my previous posts.

And about the N word:
Quote:
Obviously it opens up the who can say the word and who can't debate.

Well, since white people are definitely not allowed to say it, it still makes me wonder why black people are allowed to say it among themselves. It's hypocritical don't you think? If it's an extremely offensive name for a black person, then its use should have no exemptions.

Well, I honestly can't see why it's whong to talk about being white or white to talk about being whong, but I surely am white in saying that it's whong to mention being whong and white to mention being white in today's society. White?

Personally, I loathe political correctness. In the Northern Territory here in Australia, a vast amount of Aboriginal people are poor. Of course, instead of spending money on poor people in general it's spent on Aboriginal communities to change this. Basically, poor non-Aboriginal people aren't particularly cared about

Almost humorously enough, Pauline Hanson got voted into Australian parliament once because of her stance against "Aboriginals [receiving] more benefits than non- Aboriginals"; which is still true to this day.

Also, have any of you seen agulto's avatar? Why does it make me think that he believes he belongs in a "disadvantaged" social group? Rolling Eyes

Maybe we should ask him? Smile It could also be a symbolic avatar taking a position against any kind of discrimination. There are many interesting Avatars at Frihost, also like the one below Smile

Ahh, but my reason was that his was similar to the example below. Definitely not taking a stance against discrimination:

Black person: "You're white."
White person: "You're black."
*black person stabs white person* Evil or Very Mad

And yes, I was politically incorrect! I used a BLACK PERSON IN AN EXAMPLE WHO STABBED SOMEBODY! Let's burn me at the stake Shocked

I have too much respect for your opinion Hogwarts to want to see you burn at a stake, even though I am certain that you would do the burning with great style and humour. Burning people will not be the same after that Laughing

Back to the topic, think what you are saying directly, is what possibly I have been trying to say too. People should come out and say what they mean. For example discrimination is definitely present in Canada, except in a total different way of course as for example if a CEO should want a female white Secretary as a temp when he consults with a Temp Agency, he would by law be unable to request "female" and "white", he would only be able to ask for a Secretary. So if a black male secretary is sent to him, he may then ask the Temp Agency to send a greater selection of candidates for X, Y, Z reasons that may have nothing to do with what he really wants. So I guess in the end nobody knows where they stand with one another, and the poor black male secretary may think he is lacking in something. Guess all of these are games people are playing Twisted Evil .
